Only 4 years after they started flying regional routes in New Zealand, Jetstar is now pulling out from most of it.

Their routes from Auckland to Napier, New Plymouth and Palmerston North are being shut down, as well as their route from Wellington to Nelson.

They are keeping their routes between Auckland and Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch, Auckland and Dunedin and Auckland and Queenstown from what I can gather.

Seems all their routes were they use the Bombardier Q300 is being shut down.

Wonder if there will be a market for smaller airlines like Air Chathams to take over some of those routes.

Come in Shane Jones, your regions need you (to comment at least).

Although Jetstar are a massive pain to travel with, this is a real shame as AirNZ will just jack up prices again.

Prices weren't much better, if at all, than Air NZ most of the time so not that surprising.

Would rather be on an Air NZ flight and be allowed to take a coffee on board - no hot drinks has got to be the single stupidest rule Jetstar have.

Not surprised, had heard rumors they would be gone by Christmas. Flown on them twice from Nelson and it was fine. But prices last few years have hardly been competitive to Air NZ combined with only 4 flights a day the times never worked.

Not been impressed with Jetstar flying from Wellington to Auckland. They seemed to have a very relaxed view on departure times. Almost lost us the connection last time we flew with them.

Was happy they started flying to Napier when we lived there, because the Air NZ prices dropped pretty significantly.

What this clearly highlights is that Air NZ are not the enemy on regional routes as Shane Jones and most Kiwis seem to think. If Jetstar manage to lose $20 million, then clearly the prices they were charging were unsustainable.
Look at all the competitors who have failed before them flying regional routes.
Perhaps Shane Jones should put his money where his mouth is and start subsidising regional routes if he thinks they are that important, or stop happily taking dividends from Air NZ while expecting them to run a not for profit business.

Guess Jetstar found the same as Air NZ that these regional routes are not profitable and unlike Air NZ can just abandon them.

Having a laugh at the stuff.co.nz article, Kiwis are so naive. All the talk of Air NZ screwing the regions, surely it’s not that difficult to understand that the regional routes are not highly profitable as we all seem to think.

I feel for the guys and girls who are going to have their lives turned upside down when the operation ends. The downside of being a professional pilot, is that your skills aren't easily transferable (a bit like a surgeon).

I know the people who work the line put in their all to keep the operation as reliable as you can with some of the oldest Q300's around and limited support.

Jetstar is horrible and Qantas is not any better. Maybe Chatham Air will pick up more regional routes.

Never had issues with Qantas or Jetstar and used both airlines for many years

Desirable, Feasible and Viable - with the intersection being the cornerstone of any product or service.

Let's break this down:

Feasible - YES - They have the planes, pilots, support etc
Viable - NO - Making a loss as they lead the race to the bottom.

So the only play they really have is upping the Desirability, and relying on price alone as the only desirable element is naturally going to end in tears.

Feel sorry for those that will loose jobs over this :(

So where was the commerce commission when they approved the code-sharing relationship between Qantas and ANZ on the basis that it would not impact competition. Not that that may have made a difference, but it is fortuitous timing that Qantas owned Jetstar pulls out of competition with ANZ now that Qantas is selling codeshare tickets on ANZ operated flights.
