Hi All,

My partner and I are flying to the States next month. She is Silver and I am Gold. We have applied my 2x RU's to my flight and her 1x RU to hers. After having applied the RU's she last month retained Silver so now has another RU available.

We have tried to apply this RU to the same flight as her original RU, so effectively double upgrading to Business, but Air NZ have said that this is not allowed. Their reasoning is that Silver's aren't given 2x RU's so should be able to use them.

I understand what they're saying but disagree.

Has anyone had a similar experience? We've spoken to Air NZ customer services and have been knocked back several times. It doesn't help that their Premier team are on during the day when my partner and I are at work (not together) and so I can't contact them on her behalf as they require her to be with me in order to give authority.

Any help appreciated.

I think you're pushing your luck, she might be even lucky to get a confirmed upgrade when it comes time to fly.

They have a 12 month life for reasons such as this, so you don't accumulate and stack. I think Air NZ is being fair in this situation, your wife can use it on the way home.

Thanks for the comment mate. You're right, we will likely be lucky just even to get upgraded one class, just thought it was a little bit weird who they don't allow a Silver to use 2x RU's that they've earnt on the one flight (it would be rare that you would have the chance), but meanwhile if you're travelling with a companion that has 2x RU's (or you're in Sharepoints group with them) they can use these both on you, notwithstanding your Silver status.

Recognition upgrades don't work the way you want them to work.

You can't stack RU's unless they are both applied at the same time by the same person. Without spending half an hour explaining how upgrades work, if the system worked the way you want it to work it would be absolute carnage with so many loopholes and exploits that the whole concept of RUs would be unworkable.

You also can't share RUs from a Shairpoints group. The only way RUs can be gifted is by an Elite.
