Hi

We're looking 1 years travel insurance

Our short list of many is Southern Cross, 1Cover and TINZ  (Travel Insurance NZ)

I've settled on TINZ as a) they allow one to double excess from 200 to 400 b) seem to NZ owned c) use the same under writer as 1Cover d) have a reverse charge emergency number for when overseas e) allow to extend to 18 months

Has anyone else used them or in particular claimed?

I haven’t used them. But my vote is Southern Cross as it’s what I’ve always used.

Earlier in the year my wife lost her iPhone while travelling in Australia, couldn’t trace it and notified police. Filed a claim and was paid out about 3 weeks later once all the documentation was sent in. No problems or stonewalling from them.

After that, I would always use Southern across as needed.

1cover and TINZ are essentially one and the same. Same Aussie parent and same underwriters, but just slightly different policies aimed at different market segments.

I use 1cover for my annual policy because their policy was almost identical but slightly better in a few areas that didn't concern me, but price wise 1cover is significantly cheaper.

@sbiddle doing like for like quotes I found TINZ were approx 10% less than 1Cover even with the same excess more so with a $400 excess

Except the SCTI annual policy is very bad value for what it is, offers zero domestic cover (1cover and TNZI offer domestic cover with their policies) as well as providing cover for domestic connections as part of international travel. Unless SCTI policies have changed in the past year or so since I last looked they offer zero cover until you have left NZ, meaning if you (for example) have an accident on the way to the airport for a domestic connection for an international flight and missed this you will have zero cover.

I just looked at their prices now and it looks like they're more aligned with 1cover than they used to be price wise - historically they were a lot more expensive.

As for excess I guess it depends what you really want cover for - my travel patterns with ~80 flights per year are potentially different to you so there is no way I'd opt for a $400 excess for a $80ish saving. I try and minimise my excess, but 1cover now charge $95 to reduce the excess from $200 to $100 which means there is zero point in paying it unless you expect to have multiple claims per year.

Overall both policies are pretty similar, and I don't by any means think either are amazing policies but they do cover most of what I want. To get a better policy that will give better disrupt / irrops cover you will probably pay twice as much per year for a worldwide plan.

We just used Zoom for the last year, who like 1Cover and TINZ are effectively from the same 'family' with same underwriter.

No issues, but we did not need to make a claim.

Interesting as you say same under writer and "family" add both Zoom and TINZ are Business Name/Trading name of The Insurance Geeks yet different 0800 numbers and different addresses on the companies register. I wonder whether they are the same company with two brands?
