1) Adequate investment in infrastructure to maintain and grow with demand.

2) Critical Govt services - Health, education, justice, defense

3) Social spending

Any 2 can be prioritised as per the political will of the party in power, but this will leave the 3rd deficient of funds to make any real impact. Which 2 are prioritised really depends on the overall leaning of the political party in power. You can't keep dividing up the $ and expect all areas to perform.

Its not necessarily the Govts position to grow the economy, that should be left to the market / businesses, but it is the Govts responsibility to create an environment in which businesses can grow (export markets, access to resources through proper legislation etc).

Blame them instead of the incumbent. And instead of the following Government assuming that changes.

I think it's probably more productive to ask why the government with an absolute majority who campaigned on fixing these things chose to instead sit back and watch them get worse, while they tried to centralise as many jobs into Wellington as possible and vapourised huge amounts of cash in doing so.

Relitigating the past with governments who have been and gone seems pretty pointless, when ones who have the chequebook today are doing such a piss-poor job of it while at the same time trying to claim some sort of moral high-ground.

gv27: Likewise, another thing National should have been dragged for, quite rightly, is the walking away from urban infill intensification in favour of greenfields.

Did ACT help develop that accord? It will be interesting if ACT won't vote with National to remove that.

The topic is National, not current government. There's another thread for that.

I was about to say that's an old story but actually that's new - the article says the Luxon family owned two Teslas.

Yes, it sounds like he traded in the Model 3 they have and then got a Model Y. Since then, he's been making a big deal about how people who can afford it shouldn't be getting a rebate to buy a Tesla, only for a journalist to run a check against the rego of his new Model Y and find out that he has infact claimed the rebate on it.

Polling for this election is turning out to be a bit of a seesaw event. If I was in National I would be concerned about Luxon's PM polling though - he just doesn't seem to be cutting through with voters. How long has he been in the job now? Over a year?

National leader Christopher Luxon appears to have claimed Clean Car Discount on new Tesla

So many easy own goals. I don’t like National for their policy and the complete disinterest in lifting all NZers, but I almost feel sorry for him. Almost

Do you mean as opposed to Labours "drag everyone down to the same level" approach as has been so well demonstrated this week? Rather than fixing the root cause let's just apply a band aid eleswhere thus creating more division. Very much a mindset of "I want what you have".

National sure hasn't been perfect in the way it's done things in the past but I much prefer their stated aim of giving everyone an equal opportunity rather than Labour's which seems to be trying to give every one an equal outcome.

For the last time: it's a discussion about National. It's not a comparison to current government.

We do have to ask why you keep saying this in different topics. The only first world economy in recession? It just isn't true.

It’s interesting that you never got a response.

In the end they’ll probably win, largely because it’s their turn. Luxon isn’t great but he’s not a gibbering fool and that’ll probably be enough.

Pretty much all the COViD pandemic governments have been kicked out around the world. Of course they all got lots of things wrong and we’re in a very challenging economic environment around the world.

How long they last is a different story.

The face of the current Govt already kicked herself out and many NZers seem to think that all the Govt poor decisions went with her. I don't think that will help compare Nationals chances vs Labour when looking at the rest of the world.

National may have made a mistake, trying to install John Key V2.0 as a leader, Luxon just doesn't have the same charisma, confidence or credibility as JK and his naivety shows up too frequently. I have no desire to see Labour win a 3rd term, but I have a strong suspicion that is what we will get until National can present a viable alternative as party leader.
