After what happened in 2016 (remember, every single poll in the US had Hillary set to be their next president) - I'm wary of the polls now. But I really, really hope they're on the money this time.

Imagine how Hillary would have handled the coronavirus. America probably still would have got it, yes, but the government response would have been much better.

Still baffles me that most Republicans think Trump is doing a "good job" of managing it...I suppose, until it starts affecting people they care about.

The Trump administration is backing an effort to overturn the Affordable Care Act, the health care law that lets people sign up for private insurance on public marketplaces and protects people with preexisting conditions.

And the Trump administration just told the Supreme Court that they want the court to vote to get rid of the law - despite the pandemic. *

Democrats don’t want that to happen, but they also think this could be a winning campaign issue for them, and perhaps Trump just elevated it.

A quick look back at how we got here

2017

During the Obama administration: A linchpin for Obamacare is that if you don’t have health insurance, you pay a tax penalty. That mandate has been challenged in court, and the Supreme Court upheld it.

Shortly after: Republican attorneys general from 20 states saw an opportunity to get rid of the law. They argued that Obamacare is unconstitutional now that the government basically can’t tax people.
2020

Coronavirus hit and tens of millions of Americans lost their jobs. Tens or even hundreds of thousands lost their health insurance, too.
Nearly 500,000 Americans have signed up on HealthCare.gov as the economy shuttered.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case on Obamacare, potentially in October. That probably means any ruling will come after the election.

Late Thursday night: The Trump administration filed a brief to the Supreme Court on this case, asking the justices to get rid of the entire law.
“The entire ACA must fall,” they wrote of the Affordable Care Act.

...Trump has stressed from the beginning — and repeatedly — that wearing masks is voluntary. He has declined to be photographed publicly wearing one. He also has repeatedly ridiculed Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, for using a mask.

But his most stunning comments about masks, arguably, came last week. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal’s Michael C. Bender, Trump went so far as to suggest that masks could be counterproductive.

“Masks are a double-edged sword,” he said. “People touch them. And they grab them and I see it all the time. They come in, they take the mask. Now they’re holding it now in their fingers. And they drop it on the desk and then they touch their eye and they touch their nose. No, I think a mask is a — it’s a double-edged sword.”

Trump even suggested that he views masks as a political statement against him personally.

“It could be, yeah. It could be,” he said. “But it could also be they feel better about it. I mean, I’m okay with it. Look, I’m okay with it. But the mask is a double-edged sword and I see it."

I read somewhere that the main reason he won't wear one is he sees it as a sign of weakness, or giving in, or some such crap.

I thought it was because he didn't want people to see his orange tan bronzer smeared on the mask when he removes it to eat fried chicken.

I understand he also thinks a chicken drumstick is, literally, a double edged sword.

This is similar to another megachurch's claim in Florida some months ago, claiming ozone generators killed coronavirus.

Except that Florida pastor was arrested for defying state laws. I'd expect Trump to praise the Arizona pastor.

Clinton was incredibly unpopular, as was Trump. Biden has his sexual allegations, though it seems voters have put it to one side for now. The way Biden wins is that voters are so sick of Trump's drama, and Trump furthering the bungling of the Covid-19 response, that they vote Trump out. The bonus of Biden would be that he is old and part senile, so unlike Trump the cabinet and advisors will make the big decisions, and Biden won't do a 2 am tweet overturning what decision he made the day before.

I heard Bill Maher speculating that COVID has been helping Biden, in an expected way: by keeping him off the campaign trail.

Biden is well known for

public gaffes
physically touching people around him
because of his age, higher chance of dying from Covid

So by self-quarantining, he's helping his campaign.
