OMG I can not believe I am going to say this, but I agree with those words.

I really doubt you agree with Trump on this. Trump really does not want to hear about the misdeeds of these historical figures. In many cases living relatives of these figures agree it's time for these monuments to go.

Once you start destroying or rewriting history, you are bound to repeat it. You must learn from history, the good and the bad. Once you start destroying books, art & records, you are on the slippery slope of failure and destruction. Ask and review the past of any despotic country and you will see the truth in this.

I think you don't have to worry. Trump has signed an executive order for the establishment of some kind of official American statue preservation park. He's also signed some other executive order preventing local authorities moving monuments of this nature. Some local authorities have responded instead with the creation of visual barriers so a monument cannot be seen.

CNN: The explosive tell-all book by Trump's niece is coming out two weeks earlier than expected

A tell-all book by President Trump's niece Mary, a licensed clinical psychologist, will now be published next week, two weeks earlier than expected, the publisher Simon & Schuster said Monday.

The book portrays the president as a "damaged man" with "lethal flaws" who "threatens the world's health, economic security, and social fabric," the publisher described on its website.

Mary Trump remains entangled in a legal battle over whether she has violated a confidential settlement agreement. But the court case will not affect the release of the book.

"Due to high demand and extraordinary interest in this book, 'Too Much and Never Enough' by Mary L. Trump will now be published on July 14, 2020," Simon & Schuster said Monday.

It was previously scheduled to come out on July 28.

The Economist says there’s nearly a 99 percent chance that Joe Biden will win more popular votes and around a 90 percent chance that he will win more electoral college votes.

But what if Trump won’t concede defeat?

That is a nightmare scenario for our democracy that could make the 2000 showdown over Florida’s hanging chads seem like a grade-school dispute by comparison.

Removing statues is not rewriting history. It does not change what has happened, and it will not automatically remove chapters from history books. But it will remove a monument erected to celebrate the actions of that particular person.

I saw another cartoon over the weekend that was along the same lines but can't find it now, showed a line with the coronavirus numbers climbing, and his approval dropping at the same time...while he was sliding down the down line.

This focus on statues is losing sight of the forest for the trees. Rioters have always focused on something to take their anger out on. Historically this has been:

* Human beings (typically a specific group, see "pogrom" and "ethnic cleansing").

* Shops.

* Synagogues/churches.

* University buildings/computer centres (Vietnam-era).

Given the standard shopping list of targets for rioters and the current one:

* A small number of replaceable inanimate stone and concrete objects

which one would you choose as preferred targets for attack? Of all the things they could go for, statues are probably the least loss. Wait a few weeks for things to die down, push them back upright again, wash off the graffiti and you're done. Much easier than replacing human beings.

It still fascinates me that he lies so blatantly when these can be easily disproved. I guess it's an effective strategy when you've indoctrinated your supporters to only believe what you say.

I don't think the statues are any loss at all. In normal times, most people don't even notice a statue, or recognise the person portrayed, or know the history, or care about it. Statues are just there. They don't represent anything, until someone decides they do. Statues are just symbols to fight over. There are cheaper and better ways to choose such symbols. Instead of spending all that money on statues, just put up some park benches and give them names.

That's actually a good point. Name one statue in a park or square in a several-km radius of you, and if you can do that say who it is, why/by whom it was set up, and what it commemorates.

Best I can do is a statue of Queen Victoria in Albert park that I walked past every day for years, and that's ~20km away. No idea when it was put up or why, apart from the name connection to Albert Park.
