rugrat:

Under the Greens policy why would anyone work part time?

Earn under $325, get topped up to $325. Do no work, get topped up to $325. Or is there something I missed?

Then there's couples if one working not other, or both not working, or are two single people better off?

Abatement is improved under the same policy.

gzt: The fact it is deferred means I'm entirely comfortable with that outcome.

Then why not make it 20%? Or 40%? Just defer it, right?

I mean it works for Councils, and certainly hasn't been used as a way for them to brush off criticism of the effects of lifting rates at above the rate of inflation for years. It beats coming up with a better targeted assistance package or making savings elsewhere.

I would have more time for the intent behind this as a policy platform if the Greens weren't also arguing for taxpayer subsidies for people who can afford to buy new electric cars.

The Association of Consumers and Taxpayers has officially gone from an economics based party to one rooted in the culture wars.

Its list has Seymour puppet at 2, a gun lobbyist at 3, and a climate change denier at 4.

It's a fundamental problem with their objectivist epistemology.  It's a freaking religion / cult, and as such you can extract from it a "rational" argument to support almost whatever you like.

It ultimately fails when you consider "practical" issues.  For example, two privately owned roads (state ownership is an antichrist - as it necessitates "force" to extract communal payment).  There's a crossroad - so who gets to decide who has right of way - decide on "the rules" (and cost)?

Sorry if this sounds abstract - but it's actually not.  Of course if you point out their delusional folly - you're a "commie".

They're sucked in / entrapped by delusions of success in "mind games".  You want rational discussion about it - you'd have better chance convincing a Scientologist that a McDonnell Douglas DC8 can't fly in a vacuum.

ACT seems desperate:

Stuff: Oct 2019 ACT Party leader David Seymour says his party will not return a donation from Mike Allen, a Christchurch businessman who sells mock "Make America Great Again" hats to fund advertising for far-right Facebook pages and who threatened in a since-deleted Facebook post to "destroy mosque after mosque till I am taken out".

I hope the national party aren't planning on criticising anyone from the government about dodging tough questions. The Jian Yang saga really has taken on the appearance of the theatre of the absurd.

ACT always had the feel of a university club-room where people argued about purity of ideals, but then again the Greens feel a bit that way to me some times too.

As for Dr Yang - not sure why National can't just turn him loose for an interview. I would like to see Muller asked about it.

I will note that he seems to have had more scrutiny as an opposition backbencher than some high profile government ministers have had in the last three years. I certainly can't remember anyone showing up at Twyford's house asking where the Light Rail works were.

Paula gone. According to Twitter, she told Tom Sainsbury in advance so they could do a video together.

She told Muller at 9am this morning.

This is amazing.

Perhaps because light rail has been publicly addressed. You clearly aren't happy with the answer but it has been covered extensively.

And because no one anywhere is going to Twyfords house for the answer to anything because it's quite clear he would not have a clue!

Toxic is a fair description but it's also pretty under-stated. She represents some of the worst tendencies of her generation. She took everything that there was to take from the state to help herself up and then spent most of her life kicking the ladder away from people who needed it, whilst endlessly hammering the less fortunate with a degree of indifference and callousness that epitomises a form of utter sociopathy. She's frankly quite disgusting.

'Toxic' and 'sociopathic' are not the first terms that would have occurred to me, but I did always find Paula Bennett rather unpleasant and unlikable. I am not a fan of any National frontbencher but I certainly won't miss her.

She continually espoused the virtue of personal responsibility but obviously has no sense of irony to note that she required the intervention of a stomach stapling operation to help her control her weight.

Talk about hypocrisy.

This man makes me cringe. How stupid can a party and nation be, to invite someone with such close links to foreign spies into government.
