With a need for thousands more workers, and Twyford promising 100k new houses, how does this stack with reducing immigration by 30k or more?

Allow 30K of USEFUL immigrants to come and do the work that needs doing?

As someone with first hand experience of NZ immigration I cannot imagine how anyone who does not have useful skills, good health and a clean record gets in here.

It's blooming hard to get in, unless there's a special category for useless layabouts which I did not see!

Reducing immigration and still increasing the number of construction workers aren't mutually exclusive.

They are allowed to tell people coming to NZ to work in a restaurant as wait staff for below minimum wage by an unscrupulous owner, under the guise of studying some junk language course from a second rate learning institution, to take a hike.

They are at the same time allowed to say, hey you have experience in construction? Sure, come right in!

It's not like there's some law saying overall immigration is reducing so EVERY SINGLE INDUSTRY must reduce their immigration intake accordingly.

Have a think matey, rather than just spouting off your right wing nonsense lol.

It seems that people who are disabled are not well looked after at all, and its difficult for them to speak up. A single person with disability living in their own home receives approx. $270/week. Rates are about $50/week. So its not really possible to live on that.

I am assuming that doesn't take into account the other things like housing supplements and addons that they might be entitled to?

If you live in your own home there are no supplements other than a portion of Doctors visits. No housing supplements if you own your own home.

What percentage of the immigrant population do you think fit the restaurant scenario?

There are a lot of industries crying out for people. Construction is just one.

I can only assume you're being facetious as all your points are incorrect as far as I'm aware. Could be ignorance on my part though, please do point me in the right direction if I am incorrect?

You haven't addressed my post though. Why do you think overall immigration can't be reduced and construction related immigration increased at the same time?

I'm not sure which part of the scenario you are referring to. In any case, working in a restaurant is by and large not a highly skilled job. We should not be importing people en masse either solely so they can go work as a waiter, or as a chef in some cheap cafe selling sandwiches and baps. We shouldn't be letting in students to study at these cheap and nasty education institutes as a means to get a visa, while working their "20 hours a week" at a restaurant on the side.

National had a very hands off approach to immigration, and look where we are now. What is wrong with targeted immigration where we need it and only where we need it?

I agree with your point. What I'm confused by is the wider suggestion in the media etc that somehow hordes of people who contribute nothing are somehow getting in and taking up space.

I never saw any evidence in the process that such people would get in. So, as you say, if we need the people coming in, how will we usefully reduce the numbers?

The process has been quite tight for many years, even before the previous government. There was quite a strict process to get approval to recruit internationally as long as there was a shortage firms eg engineering firms could get a licence. The shortage however had to be demonstrated and confirmed by a Government dept. Not sure how education applies....I assume to study isnt full immigration, just a temporary visa whilst studying.

If you are asking me...that is the same point I am making...Coalition seems to supporting massive immigration for construction and how will they slash the numbers without upsetting tourism, hospitality etc. ?
