Rikkitic:  He will be remembered as a spineless sycophant who finally did the right thing much too late. Should he be congratulated for belatedly recognising where his self-interest lay?

A very long Twitter thread by Set Abramson. It starts below but you can read on a single page here

A deep dive into any Trump speech is as productive as Qanon followers looking at the video's timestamps to find secret messages.

Even if Trump prepares for speech, which is a big "if", his brain starts throwing dice for which path to follow

1. I'm the smartest/bestest person ever

2. My enemy's are jealous of my greatness

3. I once heard... I don't know, sounds true to me

4. Insult an enemy

5. eliminate / fire / terminate an enemy

6. turn a friend into an enemy.

SJB:

IMO his mental issues have led him inexorably to this point.

A few years ago he was probably sitting around wondering what to occupy his time with apart from golf (he was too old now for any more philandering) and watched a political rally. If anything would tickle an ego it's one of those so a while later there he is running for President with adoring crowds bowing at his feet, the more outrageous the statements from him the more they seem to adore him

And surprise, surprise he won. Now he's on the ultimate ego trip.

But halfway thru the trip things go wrong. There is a pandemic. And he doesn't have the tools in his armoury to correct the situation (he is incapable of empathy) so he tries more and more drastic measures to correct the situation all to no avail until he hits the buffers.

It's not accurate to label him as a nazi because he doesn't believe in anything at all except his own importance. He is just as likely to accidentally, without realising, use methods from the Stazi or Mao or Stalin handbooks if they popped into his head.

As I posted earlier, he's just a B-lister who ended up in the wrong job. And once the job ends in a few days time that's what he will go back to being.

The pandemic wasn't his downfall. Racism, mysoginistic, narcissism, he was never equipped for the good of his country, its always been an ego trip, another tick on his self important bucket list. He failed from day one. No wall, no locked up Hillary, kids lost from their families, Muslims  outcast, met with Kim Jong Un, another fail. Tax cuts then they pay it to the US Government via trade war tariffs. The economy never fired, only Wall St. Then he incites a coup riot, calls his people to block the election while they are under riot protection. 1814 was the last time the Government democracy was attacked, at least that was a war not the President attacking his own country. No POTUS has been impeached twice, wait till Thursday.

No, its not a lack lustre President failing

Nothing to stop him running in 2024, but I don't know if all of the Republican party would actually want him back, although I know he commands a fairly significant proportion of their base.

I also feel sorry for Michael Pence. While I totally disagree with his politics, I think it's completely unfair that - despite backing Trump basically 100% for the last 4 years, the second he doesn't bend to Trump's (unrealistic) demands (overturn the election results in favour of me), Trump just throws him under the bus, along with the rest of the losers involved in the riot.

While that Josh clown hasn't got a hope of being President anytime soon (every time anyone mentions his name, the riot is going to come up - ditto for the Canadian Ted Cruz), how will all this bode for Pence? How will he be remembered once the dust has settled from all this carry-on?

He will be impeached and while that doesn't remove him from office, it stops him running ever again. Pence is weak, a follower, but at least he did step up, or he he stepping up to protect his place on the GOP give that I expect many in the GOP want Trump goneburger even though the numbers dont support that. Secret ballot would IMHO

Pence will probably be the next in line, plays the game, religious, prefers whites, same old story but at least he plays the normal white game and is unlikely to be the cause of many deaths in 4 years (not referring to Covid)

I'm not a fan but I have to say Abramson makes a good case that Trump knew exactly what he was doing based on exactly what Trump said. Without even mentioning all the crazy stuff Giuliani and Don Jr said at the same rally. Wow.

Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania said Saturday he thinks President Donald Trump "committed impeachable offenses,"

How many have said that for GOP? Few. How many think it. Id say the vast majority. If GOP wants to move forward, Trump is a lead weight, they all know that

50 year career journalist Dan Rather calls it as a coup attempt - as have many other 'middle america' type of journalists during this period. This is pretty similar to Judy Bailey coming on TV to announce a coup attempt has taken place:

rugrat:

What's wrong with our Privacy Commissioner?

"NZ Privacy Commissioner John Edwards has questioned the permanent suspension of Donald Trump from Twitter, calling for urgent regulation of social media platforms.

...But Edwards' concerns are not about whether the bans were justified, but instead the fact that private multinational companies are making these moderation decisions, rather than regulators."

How does NZ Privacy Commissioner John Edwards propose to do this? It's not like giving a movie a rating to keep children out.

in 2019, there were about 2 movies released a day.

in the same time Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp handle 60 billion messages a day.

Trump put forward that he should create his own social media platform. I say more power to him. I'll never use it (and he'll never spend his own money to develop it).

There's no regulating billions of individual messages per day.

So the Privacy Commissioner could go with the China model and make it punishable by prison / fines to use Twitter or any other unpalatable service within New Zealand.

There's no in-between.

The Republican Party did not have much choice about having him in the first place. Secondly, Trump does not care if he destroys it from within or without during a campaign, as long as he walks away with the money.

If a legal system only holds ordinary citizens accountable but not a corrupted president, then it is a bad legal
system.

Al Capone went to jail not for his criminal activities but for tax evasion. So make something of it! ;-)
