Some of the comments here seem to forget that it's not Mr Trump simply manufacturing the wins and any poll leads - ordinary Americans are doing that.


So if he gets elected to be the head of one of the largest democracies in the world, you're left with one choice really. You either accept the democratic will of the people or you decide you know better than they do.


It was Winston Churchill who said that the best argument against democracy was a five minute conversation with the average voter....



As I have said multiple times the election isn't about the people. The people vote you speak of is called the popular vote but the votes that win the election are something different based on delegate votes etc. Whilst there can be correlation there isn't always as demonstrated by Obamas second term.

Interesting how a Drumpf ancestor changed the family name. Reminds me of a gentleman named Schicklgruber. Actually nearly everything about Drumpf reminds me of a gentleman named Schicklgruber. It will be interesting to see just how much we have not learned from history.

The worst thing Americans could do is to not take Trump seriously. He's serious. The second worst thing would be to assume the constitution will limit his action or damage. It will not. Executive power is USA is immense and flexible.

+1   I suggest watching On the Beach (1959 version - not the crap remake) by Nevil Shute - it will prepare you for the Trump era.

Hopefully suicide pills will be provided by the government, as in the movie.
(If you don't know what I'm talking about, read the book or see the movie)

I just had an intriguing thought. In the unlikely event that Drumph does win, it will be unlike any other election in history. There will be a huge number of extremely upset people, convinced that the end is near. Some will have grown up on time-travel stories. All will be convinced that history is about to repeat itself. A significant number will convince themselves that this time around they have to do something, whatever the consequences. Result: Drumph will not survive to finish out his first term. No matter how good his security is, he will not be able to escape the sheer number of those out to get him. He will be probably be lucky to last even a week.

I don't agree. If a party wins in NZ, they are God. They have a majority of seats, and if they put forward a law, it wins. In the US, the Senate is God. Obama is a Democrat, the Senate is largely Republican. Thats a halt. On one hand thats a good thing, but on the other it stops the voted majority running the country and the mandate of the people. OTOH and American election is usually 50.5% vs 49.5%

I agree. he's loud, outlandish, insulting. Ive been to the US many times, lived there a month a year, not just touristing. State elections are where you don't put forward your hopes and dreams, its where you tell the public the dirty laundry. That wont cut it in the global world. I agree with Linuxluver, the world will disavow his antics, cut the US off in many issues. He wont last a term. I will watch the news more to see that happen. Perhaps a global, and American targeted President will be found. The US is doing it hard, their infrastructure is old and rotten. The tall, brass and glass and gold coloured buildings aren't where the US is. I can see him winning, as they are a great lot, a patriotic lot, and that will take them down the Don path to their detriment.

The president can legally start a war without anyone else. It's an emergency! ok then it's perfectly legal.

US President does not need approval to start a war. Yeah some approvals are required to continue it after 30 days but who cares about that.

Next up, executive orders. The US president cannot make law with executive orders and they must be consistent with existing law.

But who cares! They have to do what you say! Go detain anyone who cannot produce immigration papers. I don't care what it takes RIGHT NOW!

I really hope, for the sake of the American people (and the world?) that Trump does not become their next president. I can't stand the guy. He's rude, brash, racist...unstable, even. I have family in the United States and for them it would be a big step backwards (especially for women's rights) if that clown became their president.

 

Sure, Hillary isn't perfect, but she's sure the better one this time around.

 

Still, in 2008 Hillary won the first few, then Obama came in and cleaned up on Super Tuesday. Maybe the same thing will happen to Trump this time - Marco Rubio is probably my pick for the Republicans. Ted Cruz's policies are almost as bad as Trump's weak, half-baked ones.

If Trump were to be President the rest of the world would return to doing what they did when Bush was in the White House: work around the US in alternative groupings. The EU would resume a more leading role as others looked to it for sanity and stability. Russia / China would continue their partnership (entered into when Bush was elected in 2000) and that partnership would also gather friends and perhaps even allies.  We've seen this before up to 2008. 

 

 

Trump is much more aggressive and unstable than Bush, with less personal insight.

 

It's not the same situation as 2008.

 

 

Of course not....but the response would be similar because others have no other options but to isolate themselves as much as possible from the risks Trump imposes. IT's the same response any room full of people employs when someone in the room is too annoying to be tolerated: they ignore him as much as possible and limit - as much as possible - any engagement they can't avoid. This approach works daily and scales from creches to global leaders summits.
