Don't do the crime it you can't do the time.

I'm going to guess any civil case, where his appearance is optional but involves money, he'll show up.

I hope he
1) ignores gag orders
2) doesn't show up in court
3) gets thrown in jail for contempt of court.

Axios: Trump's courtroom and campaign calendar collision is here

Trump is confronting the crushing reality of fighting four criminal indictments and numerous other legal battles, while also trying to clinch the Republican presidential nomination.

Zoom in: Don't let the bravado and punchy fundraising appeals fool you: The demands of the GOP primary and Trump's court dates have amounted to a "scheduling nightmare," Trump senior adviser Susie Wiles told reporters last month.
  • "There's no way to sugarcoat that," Wiles acknowledged.

  • That was before Maine and Colorado took the stunning step of removed Trump from the ballot — triggering a new set of appeals and further jamming up the former president's calendar.

Guaranteed:

Like Musk, Trump begin to rely more heavily on reposting rather than writing his own social media post.

In his mind, this will
  • bypass gag orders ("I didn't say it.")

  • prevent more defamation lawsuits
See related ruling where Trump lost: E Jean Carroll repeated her allegation that Trump raped her. The court ruled her words were “substantially true”.

Translation: "I don't trust the Supreme Court."

CBS News: Liz Cheney on whether Supreme Court will rule to disqualify Trump: "We have to be prepared" to defeat him at ballot box
...
"We'll see what happens in the courts," Cheney said when asked whether she thinks the Supreme Court will ultimately disqualify Trump. "In the meantime, and in any case, we have to be prepared to ensure that we can defeat him at the ballot box, which ultimately I believe we'll be able to do."

Not much longer now. The Supreme Court 'Justices' (oxymoron?) are weighing up which of the following rulings will apply:

1) "The 14th amendment makes it clear that all States have the right to strike Trump from their ballots."

2) "While the 14th amendment appears to give States the right to strike Trump from their ballots, is it nonetheless undemocratic to prevent any US voter from supporting the candidate of their choice."

3) "The hell with it, do as you like. We're not gonna make a ruling that'll upset our wealthy sponsors. Or Clarence's wife."

There are way more ways they could go than that. "Democracy" isn't the objective of the Supreme Court, interpreting the constitution is. Ultimately what they'll do will be to rule in a way that achieves their objectives, while still following the letter of the law in some fashion. The question is how much they're willing to contort the words to match whatever decision they come to.

Maine's secretary of state was quite clever in how she worded her judgement. She said exactly the right things to appeal to the Originalists on the Court, even using their own talking points (specifically around interpreting the words as written from the perspective of laypeople of the day, and not lawyers).

It will be ... interesting.

Feel free (anyone) to add options 4, 5, 6 etc, however fanciful.

Example: "We're no longer to be known as the Supreme Court. Starting tomorrow, use of our new title, 'Supreme Governing Body Of North America' will be mandatory. Be aware that all discussions regarding the validity of the document formerly known as the 'Constitution are to cease forthwith, while we write a new rulebook. BTW, no further elections will be necessary."

Hpwever, back in the real world, I think many of you will take comfort in the content of these two videos. The first involves Stanford University History Professor Jack Rakove, speaking very knowledgeably about the language and intent of the Constitution. The second, another interview with Justice J.Michael Luttig on the likelihood of the Supreme Court's 14th Amendment ruling.

Both highly recommended (and reassuring) viewings:

The Supreme Court is supposed to deal with "gray areas."

In a perfect world, they'd leave most decisions to the other courts.

However since they
  • pick-and-choose which cases they'll take, including directly: "through the Court’s original jurisdiction. "

  • they got the job for life

  • beyond looking bad and being shunned, there's no punishment for corruption

The Hill: How does a case reach the Supreme Court?

Generally, a case can reach the Supreme Court in one of three ways:

  1. On appeal from a federal circuit court
  2. On appeal from a state supreme court.
  3. Through the Court’s original jurisdiction.

I forget to mention code of ethics.

Every other US judge and lawyer have to abide by a strict code of ethics: "you must..." and outlined are penalties if you don't

For the Supreme Court it's "you should..." It makes all the difference in the world.

That code only came into effect last year. It was primarily because of Clarence Thomas making them look bad. They were rightfully scared a law would be passed to make their code of ethics consistent with other judges.

Lucky for them, and Republicans nationwide, they wrote it for themselves, with no oversight.

Sources said Scavino told Smith's investigators that as the violence began to escalate that day, Trump "was just not interested" in doing more to stop it.

At times, Trump just sat silently at the head of the table, with his arms folded and his eyes locked on the TV, Scavino recounted, sources said.

No surprises here. A grown man loses an election, and behaves like a spoilt, petulant, sulking child when he doesn't get what he wants. Pathetic 🙄

If God made Trump, he also made African eyeworm.

An old interview from Stephen Fry.

Though Stephen Fry discusses the eyeworm, David Attenborough has referred to the parasite often earlier with a similar argument against a benevolent creator.

The Guardian: Stephen Fry calls God an ‘evil, capricious, monstrous maniac’

Trump recently in Iowa:

"First they say, ‘Sir, how do you do it? How do you wake up in the morning and put on your pants?’

And I say, ‘Well, I don’t think about it too much.’ I don’t want to think about it because if I think about it too much maybe I won’t want to do it, but I love it because we’re going to do something for this country that’s never been done before.”
---
“Think of it, magnets Now all I know about magnets is this, give me a glass of water, let me drop it on the magnets, that’s the end of the magnets.”
---
Describing the Civil War as “a tough one for our country” and a “hell of a time,

“So many mistakes were made. See, there was something I think could have been negotiated, to be honest with you, I think you could have negotiated that. All the people died. So many people died.

Abraham Lincoln, of course, if he negotiated it, you probably wouldn’t even know who Abraham Lincoln was, He would’ve been president, but he would’ve been president, and he would have been — he wouldn’t have been the Abraham Lincoln.”
---
"I want to send our support and our deepest sympathies to the victims and families touched by the terrible school shooting yesterday in Perry, Iowa. It’s just horrible, so surprising to see it here. But we have to get over it, we have to move forward.”
