Fair comment. I do maintain that National seems to place undue emphasis on roads, whether new or existing, as a panacea for every other issue.

The Hospital construction might be like Northlands bridges ?
No costings, a timeline for building work and construction that shows its possible.

So there is a rich supply of ICU nurses willing to swap the overwork of one pandemic for overwork in another.
To come to a country with no affordable housing, and that has no long term healthcare employment plan.
Maybe dump them when we are done.
That has no continuing step up in healthcare budget and tax to pay for it , not just a one or two years then budget cuts.
Easy said unless you are Denmark with tax revenue to pay for it.

I can see how National might be seen as the champion for new roads. There's no doubt about it they certainly poured some money into them after GFC.

To be fair many of those roads were something that were needed or projected to be needed. It was a way of injecting money into the economy to keep various businesses going and provide employment for New Zealanders. It seemed to be an effective and useful way to spend that money.

I don't see any complaints saying the likes of the Waikato Expressway nor the Kapiti Expressway shouldn't have been built nor Transmission Gully nor the bypassing of the Mt Messenger tunnel.

My issue isn't so much that National champions roads. Of course they are necessary. But too often they seem to see that as the only solution, to the extent of undervaluing important alternatives like public transport and other ways of doing things. Of course roads may be the only viable solution for some routes, like Napier/Taupo, but that isn't necessarily the case everywhere.

Personally I think that unless they are in public office in their own right I think the partner of the Prime Minister should keep a low profile. This is the first time in my memory that some like him has taken to speaking out like this in New Zealand and perhaps even internationally. I'm not aware of Jenny Morrison or Carrie Johnson or Sophie Trudeau or Brigette Macron or Joachim Sauer taking to twitter like this to defend their other half.

Normally (and far more importantly) a retired ex-PM usually doesn't attempt hatchet jobs against a sitting government and the expert public servants advising them, by writing opinion pieces full of lame one-liners and disinformation.

If you have endemic covid it’s a useful tool to lower the number of introduced cases. The vast majority of people will do the right thing.

If the goal is elimination it’s a waste of time.

A bit weird, but I would imagine people within the PM's office would have been pulling their hair out seeing this as much as anyone else for the exact reasons you state.

The Labour team seems to be entirely unaware of the Streisand effect. It really surprises me they spent much time at all responding to this. Key said bugger all and half of what he said was kind of silly off the cuff and not based on any assessment of evidence. Key made a couple of other suggestions that more or less match what the government is doing anyway, and that's about all.

Its getting too political. Ok, its political as the Govt is in charge, that's the default. But do we fight Covid as best we can or do we trade barbs? The Govt set up an accountability group, including Bridges etc. It could have been Union managers, but it wasn't. So, now, we are moving from a health goal to point scoring. Ive not been to North Korea yet, or maybe I am already??

I'd LOVE an election right now TBH

Going OT from Key a bit, I have yet to see a just-open-up or anti-vax thread on social media that is really about Covid. Its such a transparent & sickening politicization of their own political ideology, wrapped up in highly dubious anti-science and near psychopathic ignorance.

The most recent popular one is Shaun Hendy predicted 80,000 dead from Covid, but that didn't happen so lockdowns are not necessary. I mean no one can say that because the scenario of not having a lockdown never happened... so the author is talking about a funky time paradox and now looks dumb as a duck. But thanks to the wonderful echo chamber of social media they still get dozens of muppets agreeing with them.

I'm sure there are important things that Labour needs to be pressured on (eg. faster implementation of saliva testing), but its pretty late in the vaccination game for this tough Covid rhetoric and a 5 point plan, why not 6-9 months ago...? Kinda looks like Labour weren't the only ones who thought what they were doing was fine.

A lot of the reactions I saw today on social media re National's plan weren't exactly what I would describe as positive.

What I could see it came down to was: "National = cares about money and business, Labour = cares about lives and health".
Doesn't really seem to be much middle ground between them, from what I could tell.
