Fiddling while Rome burns ... again   😠

The Washington Post - Waltz and staff used Gmail for government communications, officials say

breaking

Trump’s national security adviser is trying to manage his way out of a crisis. But new revelations about his team’s operational security are piling up in the inbox.

Members of President Donald Trump’s National Security Council, including White House national security adviser Michael Waltz, have conducted government business over personal Gmail accounts, according to documents reviewed by The Washington Post and interviews with three U.S. officials.

The use of Gmail, a far less secure method of communication than the encrypted messaging app Signal, is the latest example of questionable data security practices by top national security officials already under fire for the mistaken inclusion of a journalist in a group chat about high-level planning for military operations in Yemen.

A senior Waltz aide used the commercial email service for highly technical conversations with colleagues at other government agencies involving sensitive military positions and powerful weapons systems relating to an ongoing conflict, according to emails reviewed by The Post

Has anyone considered simply refusing to allow the US Government officials to obtain Visas for foreign travel?

Imagine their surprise when they land and find themselves summarily deported. From everywhere except Russia.

The NY Times - Cory Booker Condemns Trump’s Policies in Longest Senate Speech on Record

breaking

Senator Cory Booker, his voice still booming after more than a day spent on the Senate floor railing against the Trump administration, on Tuesday night surpassed Strom Thurmond for the longest Senate speech on record, in an act of astonishing stamina that he framed as a call to action.

Mr. Booker, a New Jersey Democrat and one-time presidential candidate, began his speech at 7 p.m. on Monday, vowing to speak as long as he was “physically able.” In a show of physical and oratorical endurance, he has lasted deep into Tuesday, assailing President Trump’s cuts to government agencies and crackdown on immigration.

At 7:19 p.m., 24 hours 19 minutes into his speech, Mr. Booker eclipsed Mr. Thurmond’s filibuster in 1957. It is unclear how much longer Mr. Booker might speak ...

Without bathroom breaks but with occasional pauses for encouraging questions from his fellow Democrats, Mr. Booker read from a binder of notes and waved a small copy of the U.S. Constitution. He gesticulated and roared. At times, he draped himself over his lectern.

His voice grew hoarse. But it remained strong. ...

UPDATEHe has now yielded the floor after speaking for more than 25 hours.

On the one hand good on him, but on the other hand, the Democrats opposition to President Musk and his delusional VP is a very long speech, I'm sure that'll show them.

(Democrat) Susan Crawford wins Wisconsin Supreme Court race, defying Elon Musk

Thank Christ for that. Maybe eventually Elon will learn that money can't always buy elections?

But how long until the moron (or the orange buffoon) start jumping up and down screaming election fraud? πŸ™„

The  NY Times - Liberal Wins Wisconsin Court Race, Despite Musk’s Millions

breaking

Susan Crawford, the liberal candidate for a pivotal seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, overcame $25 million in spending from Elon Musk to defeat her conservative opponent, The Associated Press reported, in a totemic contest that became a critical test of the nation’s prevailing political winds.

Judge Crawford, who serves in Dane County, handily defeated Judge Brad Schimel of Waukesha County, who ran on his loyalty to President Trump and was powered by record spending in the race from Mr. Musk, the president’s billionaire policy aide. The barrage of spending in the race may nearly double the previous record for a single judicial election.

With roughly 70 percent of the vote counted on Tuesday evening, Judge Crawford held a double-digit lead. ...

For Democrats, the result is a jolt of momentum.

Term 2 off to a swimmingly good start (lol)

https://www.1news.co.nz/2025/04/02/anger-against-trump-is-forecast-to-cost-the-us-international-visitors/

Tourism Economics said it expected the number of people arriving in the US from abroad to decline by 9.4% this year. That’s almost twice the 5% drop the company forecast at the end of February.

If only my boy was going somewhere else for this school trip this year. I hope he's not detained at the border πŸ˜•

Same here, was talking to a colleague about where to submit a technical paper and both of us decided it'd be best not to send it to any US conference because neither of us wanted to go there.  Which is a pain because the two most appropriate ones are in the US.

The warmup background music at Trump's Liberation Day event was Mexican/Latin American. 🀣

And he's announcing reciprocal tariffs on the entire world right now. Personally, I say lock 'em right out. If they want to isolate themselves, let them. They'll find out what a poor choice that was before too long. It's not like you can build a new steel plant in a fortnight.

Politico - Waltz’s team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world

02 April 2025

National security adviser Mike Waltz’s team regularly set up chats on Signal to coordinate official work on issues including Ukraine, China, Gaza, Middle East policy, Africa and Europe, according to four people who have been personally added to Signal chats.

It’s a more extensive use of the app than previously reported and sheds new light on how commonly the Trump administration’s national security team relies on Signal, a publicly available messaging app, to conduct its work.

None of the four individuals said they were aware of whether any classified information was shared, but all said that posts in group chats did include sensitive details of national security work.

So, latest update is 10% tariffs on Australia and New Zealand. They will also be banning imports of Australian beef.

Both need to try to export to non USA as soon as practical, now a 5 minute job but I suspect and hope all countries work together to do that. Export to elsewhere and try to replace imports from US with other countries as much as possible
