From https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1jq4quq/for_those_curious_about_where_the_tariffs_charged/

So, the majority of the "tariffs charged to US" is actually the percentage of trade deficit, not really a tariff at all.

I like the fact that places like Myanmar apparently have zero trade with the US but are viciously charging the US 88% tariffs on the zero trade they do.

Another sign of government by amateurs, experienced bureaucrats would have cooked up the figures in a less nonsensical manner.

BREAKING NEWS: Rand Paul Delivers Epic Speech Against Trump's Tariffs On 'Liberation Day'

Wow. Rand Paul. Well even a broken clock is correct twice a day.

He once said government shouldn't require private businesses to serve customers of all races said "I don’t like the idea of telling private business owners -- I abhor racism. I think it’s a bad business decision to exclude anybody from your restaurant -- but, at the same time, I do believe in private ownership."

He also believed the U.S. was secretly planning a European Union-style merger with Mexico and Canada. I wonder how he fells about Trump's 51st state of Canada?

He also believes in punishing the sick and injured, but not the doctors. He said "Medicare is socialized medicine," and one way to control medical costs would be to impose a $2,000 deductible in the program. "But try selling that one in an election."

But back to this speech, whenever I hear "no taxation without representation" I think of the Freedom Museum in the dystopian game Fallout 4.

They could really just label the LHS "Trump, mostly".

I admire Adam Schiff, moreso because he had the nerve to sit through all of the orange buffoon's "liberation day" bs. And then he said this:

re Cory Booker's speech and Republicans calling it either "racist" (what the hell?) or "performative":

^ accurate!!

He even forgot to sign the decree! I blame the guy who shuffled him back to the stage.

The NY Times - President Fires 6 National Security Council Officials After Meeting With Laura Loomer

breaking

President Trump fired at least six senior National Security Council officials at the urging of the far-right conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, according to a U.S. official with direct knowledge of the matter.

The dismissals came a day after she met him in the Oval Office with a list of administration personnel she deemed disloyal to him.

Michael Waltz, the national security adviser, briefly defended some of his staff, though it was clear he had little if any power to protect their jobs.

It was a remarkable spectacle: Ms. Loomer, who has floated the baseless conspiracy theory that the Sept. 11 attacks were an “inside job” and is viewed as extreme even by some of Mr. Trump’s far-right allies, was apparently wielding more influence over the staff of the National Security Council than Mr. Waltz, who runs the agency.

It is unclear what the firings mean for Mr. Waltz, who has a tenuous hold on his own job.

Only Donald Trump would be stupid enough to take advice from Laura Loomer.  🙄

The S&P 500 is a USA stock market index that tracks the performance of 500 of the largest publicly traded companies, representing the overall health of the USA stock market and economy.

From the New York Times:

"Wall Street fell sharply on Thursday and was on track to have its worst day since 2022, after global markets slumped in response to President Trump’s major round of tariffs on U.S. imports.

The S&P 500 had tumbled 4.3 percent, a huge daily drop for the index, echoing sharp declines in Asia and Europe as investors reacted to the tariffs.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq was down more than 5 percent.

But the effects of the tariffs won’t be limited to the financial markets, experts said."
