freitasm: Also the State Dept top guys left the building... Those are career people, not kind of people you can pluck from private sector and hit the ground running.

You can sever the head of a chicken, drop it, and it'll hit the ground running.

Fred99:

One of Trump's tweets this morning:

Here's the article: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jan/25/compromise-doesnt-work-political-opponents-chelsea-manning

The "weakness" referred to is actually a (metaphorical - hopefully) "call to arms" to fight dirty tyrants like Trump (and his supporters) by using similar dirty tactics - rather than to "go high" (which probably more relevant to this topic, was a failed tactic for Hillary Clinton).  Trump's obsession with Obama is often "whataboutism". Trump's the president now - he should be head down / backside up and start behaving like one.

I wish I didn't have to agree with what Manning is saying - but Trump will not be taken down by reasoned rational discussion.

Yet Trump is the guy who for years accused Obama of being a liar and not being born in the USA.

Godwin's thought on Godwin's Law:

"If you’re thoughtful about it and show some real awareness of history, go ahead and refer to Hitler or Nazis when you talk about Trump. Or any other politician"

(Mike Godwin, December 14 2016)

Does Godwin's Law apply to Mussolini?

I don't think that President PostTruth is as clever as Hitler - he is much more like Benito Mussolini in appearance and intellect:

An interesting article here.

the irony  is that someone said it would take up to 40,000 workers to build it and the majority would have to be mexican workers

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I think the irony is that if he does slap a tax on Mexican imports, the Mexicans won't be paying that, the Americans will. The tax may make Mexican goods more expensive, but it won't make Mexico pay for the wall.

I read an interesting report in the economist on who illegal immigrant workers hurt. The authors conclusions were that legal immigrant workers suffer most.  They found that illegal immigrants displace legal immigrants from work and/or reduce wages in types of work dominated by legal immigrant workers.

"the word 'Fascism' is almost entirely meaningless ... almost any English person would accept 'bully' as a synonym for 'Fascist'".

(George Orwell 1944)

I agree that he's more like Mussolini, but it's also not the early 1900s.

Trump, Bannon etc seem to have miscalculated - the "liberals" won't easily roll over and be suppressed,  and the alt:right effort to discredit the media to push their evil agenda seems to be seriously backfiring partly due to the narcissistic, petulant behaviour of their commander in chief - obsessively focussing on telling blatant lies in a downright pathetic attempt to bolster his bloated ego.

Using 1930's tactics in 2017 seems doomed.

For example, "alt" twitter accounts set up anonymously by workers at government agencies when Trump ordered a communication shutdown.  Petty?  Well if he hadn't obsessed about his small crowd, it might have never happened.  Now https://twitter.com/altnatparkser has 1.25 million followers - 3x more followers than the "real" NPS account.

NOAA, NASA, EPA, CDC - all targets of Trump's fake news, fake science utter BS - doing the same.

Trump and Bannon are screaming that the media are the enemy.  Their real enemy all along has been the people.

Perhaps the legals are in lower paid work, and the illegals are cheaper as they are not paid legal wage rates.

Walls and border issues are very common throughout the world, otherwise there wouldn't be so many walls and issues.

Negative they displace others due to cash work, at below legal rates. And they wont pay income tax.

A solution is to forget about border issues, and give easy pathways. At least then you can document them, they will get paid legal rate wages, but then the employers miss out on cheap employees, and that affects local economies. The kicker is we raise issues with Chinese low pay, yet the US employers use that as well when they employ illegals.

Its complex.

Extreme vetting executive order due today. I quite like Executive Orders. The US public probably sees them as he's doing what he promised.

But he has done nothing. Pre election he talked, post 20th, he talked and signed bits of paper, nothing has changed. Say he did an order on trade tariffs. It won't say, these 23 countries, these specific goods, on this date, and this amount, it will say we will investigate, plan, and impose tariffs on some countries for some goods. Its almost laughable, but I imagine some lap it up. As I have mentioned a few tomes, talk is cheap, its the action or lack of it that will show the globe what he can do. I hope there will be an order to remove ISIS as apparently only he can do it.

Interesting article  http://edition.cnn.com/2017/01/27/opinions/may-trump-special-relationship-trade-robertson-opinion/index.html

A bit over the top when it starts off as world order is wantonly thrown to the wind. Trump-like bluster, journalistic licence. But an interesting article.

MikeB4: I live in hope that Mr Trump will moderate his language etc.

You will most likely die disappointed smile

tdgeek: I feel this is where you two and I disagree. I don't see an authoritarian elite state and historical bloodshed, nor Trump unleashing forces. Bark is worse than his bite. GOP will reign him in when the globe yawns and can't be a$$ed with him. Trade deals may be common, amongst everyone else. But I don't see the WW3-like argument. He is out of his league, he will get that when he tries to implement his silly ideas.

As you say, we cannot see into the future, but that is my take on it. Over coming months, possible weeks, we will see more of a pattern. His executive orders to me are meaningless, its his action or inaction that will be more meaningful. Such as his jail her, then she has served us wonderfully for 30 years.

You've previously described him as a mouth only and it's good to see an expansion on that. I do have to disagree with the lack of harm you [seem] see in this though. We live in a world where diplomacy rules and when that fails the daggers get drawn. Trump appears to have a level of diplomacy somewhere around zero. As per a previous post, the doomsday clock has been moved forward 30 seconds - not bad for a mouth. Fisher and Paykell are talking of moving US targeted manufacturing out of Mexico. They will keep the plant open for manufacturing targeted at other nations, but other companies who retract may not be as kind - not bad for a mouth.

His phone call to Taiwan, breaking with 40 years of foreign relations has deeply angered China who view Taiwan and their sovereignty over it as absolute. I have no doubt China will be prepared to go to war on this issue. Australia is now under pressure from the US to clarify it's position on Taiwan which will pit it against it's two largest trading partners. In the meantime Vietnam and Japan are feeling so nervous about this that Japan has promised US$1.4 billion to Vietnam to bolsters it's defences against China's advances in the area. In the meantime Trump is sucking up to Putin big time and saying nothing, in the meantime, about Crimea. In fact, based on previous statements he's made, I have a feeling he's set to recognise Russia's occupation as legitimate. This 'only a mouth' is doing an extraordinary job so far, and it's very early days yet.

Pumpedd: All Trumps developments are mad with imported steel.

He has said the wall will be built using American steel. And along these lines, if he annoys the Chinese too much they may start to insist on their share of America's debt (around 10% of Americas total debt) being paid which could potentially cause America (and thus the rest of the world) great economic strife as I don't believe they could do it, given their total level of debt. In fact He's even suggested he could get America out debt by only paying out US$0.85 on every dollar owed effectively shortchanging creditors 3 trillion dollars. His statement "I would borrow, knowing that if the economy crashed, you could make a deal" almost defies belief but this is the kind of person the world now has at the helm of the biggest superpower.

Edit1: added word to 'lack of harm' line
Edit2: added word 'billion' to amount of money Japan is promising Vietnam
