Correct. Well done. And why is that? Take a step back for a moment. It is not just about racism, that's the easy way out. Consider for a moment what my sister in law said to me …. "The saddest thing is, we only have the scum that are the English Defense League who can stand up and say something without getting shut down."

Luckily, we don't have this problem here in NZ. It is therefore easy to cast judgement.

As I said, we need to find ways around this.

Ok so your sister in law opposes the mosque. You don't mention why, maybe your sister in law opposes the mosque either for religious reasons or town planning type reasons. On the religious side I see the local Christian denominations support the mosque. Maybe it's not that reason. On the town planning side that is approved by the council.

There was a council election very recently which I assume would have been a good barometer for local feeling about the mosque. It appears to me the mosque was proposed prior to the election and approved after that election. It seems the mosque was a non-issue to most people.

Its actually the media who give her the publicity for free that she is seeking. People should not be hated against for "different" views, but those people like social media and the media in general should be held account for publicing those extreme views over and above what is normal.

I feel like it is a serious issue, Mike. Insinuators keep trying to sneak in a little subtle intolerance by dressing it up in acceptable-sounding labels and making it seem somehow not quite as despicable and dehumanising. Pity the poor native who has seen their neighbourhood change to something unfamiliar, but not a glimmer of understanding for the frightened and lonely stranger in a strange land.

Personally I prefer if you didnt refer to anyone in that way in a public forum.

This is another example of a thread that shouldnt exist due to the extreme views on the matter. Whilst I think all views are important it is not OK to call people out in this way as it really just shows the poster up in a bad light.

Some posts in this thread suggesting implied support for these fascists are a probably a woeful indictment on the state of history education in this country. It shouldn't be hard to spot fascists. If you think they might be - then they probably are.

What intrigues me about all this is how eager some people are to persuade us that Southern and her ilk aren't saying anything all that awful after all, and we would realise that if only we would listen to her. Why so much effort to get us to listen to her? Maybe she has magic words that will also infect us, like the pod people in the film? Just go to sleep and wake up a new person! Brain worms will take care of the rest.

I don't care how 'reasonable' she sounds. I care what she has been documented to have said and done. I care that her presence here and in Australia is giving her credibility that she absolutely doesn't deserve. I care that she is the worst kind of racist (the kind who is unashamed about it). Shame on her and shame on those who whisper that she isn't all that bad after all!
