It probably isn’t a good idea to turn this into a religious discussion, because people tend to get a bit crazy on both sides. I do find your points about biblical mistranslations interesting, though.
Ultimately, it is all about faith, whether one believes in religion or science (or both!). When you get to the realm of quantum physics and the Big Bang, science gets pretty metaphysical anyway, and the distinction between belief and evidence-based observation seems kind of blurry.
Personally, I have no objection to religious faith, but I do object very strenuously to the way it is twisted to fit particular agendas. I have particular problems with fundamentalism in all faiths, because it so quickly deteriorates into intolerance and bigotry and dogmatically justified violence towards those who think differently.
I do not happen to ascribe to any religious interpretation of reality, but I don’t have a problem with those who do. I respect everyone’s right to believe whatever they think is true, and I expect the same in return.
