Beccara:

Finally set up a cordon, good start. Will be interesting to see how they police it or if cars just start piling up beside it. Next weekend is looking to be the main showdown with Tamaki's lot planning to do a major convoy down for their March 1st ransom date

Why didn't this happen 2 weeks ago?

Intelligence failure to consider right wing extremists threats. Seems like they thought the protest wasn't going to do what they said they were going to do online for days and weeks prior and it looks like they took the protest at face value being about mandates

I would not discount alt-right radicalisation and foreign influences not being considered.

I see most of these people as useful idiots - just there to advance someone else's agenda. Someone behind the curtains.

This is what I have been talking about The Trumpism spilling out onto Parliament's lawn is the new virus | Stuff.co.nz

The Wellington protesters are creating mayhem for a pointless demand. Most reasonable people accept mandates have an end-point. It is impossible to give a calendar date, but they were never forever. It’s simply that we aren’t yet out of the Covid woods.

The protest shares all of Trump’s worst characteristics: childish behaviour, wild lies, insult-spewing, ignorance, extravagant promises and unreasonable demands. There is a disrespect for elite norms and predilection for conspiracy theories.

The freedom convoy has the same maundering messaging. Is it anti-mandate, anti-vax, anti-science, anti-5G, anti-Semitic, anti-the people who “killed” Jeffrey Epstein? It is all these things and more.

There are swastikas, QAnon references and a cartoon frog that is a global symbol of hate. Their iconography and rhetoric runs the full gamut of lunatic to downright evil, with notes of Nazism, white supremacy. These were all features of Trump rallies.

Chant hare krishna, grow herbs, practice yoga and smoke the peace pipe all you like. The minute you pitch your tent next to a swastika, a noose swinging for politicians and journalists, and extremist Kelvyn Alp, you are aligned.

Worse still, you are being exploited to cloak the fact this protest is being manipulated by extremists. Anyone claiming there is no dark edge to this sinister sit-in is blind or lying to you.

They exercised their freedom of choice and rejected the vaccine. Now they are throwing a tantrum on the lawn because they don’t like the consequences.

‘Good Kiwis’ do not intimidate schoolkids, make death threats, terrorise neighbourhoods, damage public property and bring small businesses to their knees. This is not our Springbok tour moment, and these people are not noble freedom fighters. This is Trumpism.

Or this shit Holocaust distortion and anti-Semitism rife within anti-mandate protests | Stuff.co.nz

Comparison of vaccine mandates to the Holocaust, where 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazi regime during World War II, was not only disrespectful, it was wrong, said Holocaust Centre of New Zealand board chairwoman Deborah Hart.

In addition to Holocaust comparisons, a swastika was painted by protesters on the Seddon statue outside Parliament; staff at the Backbencher Gastropub had been called Nazis in a verbal tirade; and references have been made by protesters towards Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, calling her “Jewcinda”. Ardern is not Jewish.

At the Christchurch equivalent protest one main sign brandished by protesters referred to public hangings in Nuremberg, implying that journalists, politicians or those who worked in public health would have to stand trial as Nazis did. Anti-mandate protesters had also been misappropriating yellow stars, and were spreading anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, Hart said.

How hard is for the police to collect evidence of hate speech and get these idiots behind bars?

That's some crazy nonsense then. Clotted blood would kill you pretty much outright. Given a few billion of us have had the vaccination and last time I had a blood test (and I've had quite a few over the past few weeks) my blood looked perfectly red, I can't understand anyone making such claims. It's obviously easily refuted.

Nuttier than a fruitcake.

Seven officers sustained injuries during the operation, ranging from scratches to an ankle injury.
Some officers also had human waste thrown over them by protesters.
Deliberately infecting someone with disease is a serious offence punishable by 14 years imprisonment.

Likewise attempting to do so attracts a significant penalty. (Stuff just now)

So, while the Police dont want to get into a situation of unreasonable force (force on people that are only troublesome and breaking minor laws), if this lot feels they are immune, the above actions will allow the Police to put the de-escalation process aside and go hard at them I would hope

There is a part of me that feels like the police should deal harshly with only those who were directly involved, partly I feel they should shut the whole thing down based on the fact they could reasonably claim the protest has now escalated and is a matter of public and police safety.

I have zero sympathies for those who sustain injuries if they attack the police.

All this alt-right stuff is crazy nonsense. You don't get anywhere refuting nutty claims from people who believe politicians are drinking the blood of babies.

The difference is that most claims made have some degree of possibility or are even 'hard to prove' ness. This is stupidly easy to disprove.

Agree.

They could have acted "just" within tolerable guidelines to ensure they are insulated from decisive action. But they seem to feel they are immune (no pun intended) and I hope they feel the wrath of the law.  Annoying, loud protests are one thing, but this is a whole other level by a magnitude as far as abuse and safety is concerned

That black blood chick, she is a nurse., (she said)  And they all lap it up, its a frenzy now.  Time to call it, as those people have by way of their actions, removed the barriers the Police are holding onto (avoiding unreasonable force)

In post Cambridge Analytica world, it seems that people can live in their own Siloed Metaverse.

Those that know better spread such crap to capture those that don't know better. Usefull idiot army.
In the middle you have those that know, but revel in a suspension of belief
like they are living in a movie or TV show where anything is possible.

Anything that attacks my enemy is my friend, even if you set yourself up for a real dictatorship.
A license to enjoy the freedom of behaving badly.

Having worked beside people connected to 'just the best' evangelicals, and shades of brethren, I saw this first hand.
I'm glad I got out, phones constantly going ping, with such obviously 'made up' reprehensible stuff.

Mostly nice people who tolerated others for years until technology advanced, then the constant pings.
It eats away at any sense of wider community, morality and decency.

I did have a passing thought, is this how the Taliban draw people in ?
USA style Evangelicals, other right wing Christians thinking they are on a crusade for Brian Tamaki.
Bannon and his crowd are well versed in lessons from Cambridge Analytica, taking to next levels.

They seem to be fully justified in attacking anyone in the vicinity including children, bus drivers, shop staff.
No such thing as reprehensible behavior, a persecution complex freeing them to persecute.

My major leaning would be that those who step out of bounds feel the full (mostly) force of the police and the full force of the justice system as a result.

Those protesters sitting inside the tolerances, meh, they can sit there in the cold at night if that's what they want.

Those cretins are throwing their shit at the police. That's what monkeys in a zoo do. The sooner they are put in a zoo, the better for everyone.
