The view that the GSCB surveillance powers are somehow morally equivalent to an individual, or group of individuals like Anonymous, hacking a private citizen's emails beggars belief.

I agree.. having the government spy on it's citizens is a MUCH greater crime, and far more morally reprehensible.

Oh please. Please read the Act and then comment.

Back on subject, personally I don't care.

All political parties get up to this, either directly or by proxy, in some way or another. A plague on all their houses.

I'm going to decide how to vote based on policy, once they are all announced,

Sigh. More than six weeks to the election, and already I'm sick of the whole thing.

Slightly OT, but I just watched Jacinda Ardern MP on TV3's Firstline discussing/commenting on this topic. By the performance she gave I believe that if Cunliffe trips and stubs his dick at this election, then she is potentially the next Labour leader and a future PM.

KiwiNZ: Watched Hager on TV last night, the guy is a fraud.

Watched <insert politician's name> on TV last night, the <guy/girl> is a fraud.

I think Hager deserves some credit for attempting to bring to the public's attention, the increasingly dirty nature of political campaigning.
Of course you'll want to think he's a fraud if you're blindly loyal to the party he has in his sights.

I am loyal to no party, I vote for the electorate candidate I feel is best qualified and I vote for the party that is putting forward the policies I believe in. In the past few elections I have voted, NZ Green, Labour, National.

Hager saw an opportunity to make some money peddling rehashed nonsense and irrelevant garbage.

I have felt that about Jacinda Ardern for awhile, it is still too early for her though.

Does 'good research' include the alleged hacking of private communications?

I believe those are leaked documents. Other than your own political bias - what makes you distrust Nicky Hager?

Nothing - he is left wing and I never trust anyone that foolish. Same as I never trust religious believers.

Let me guess, so you'd rather trust Cameron Slater, Judith Collins, Michelle Boag, Don Brash, Aaron Gilmour ...et al?

Politics is 100% dirty. Clean people do not go far. You could write a book about just about every successful political group in the world. If you can uncover their secrets. Those who are amazed have been living under a coconut shell or are very young and beautiful.

ajobbins: Slater has said today he has about 80GB of emails, Hagar said he was given about 8GB of material.

The average size of a cheap USB memory stick. Maybe Slater needs to be looking at someone close to home?

Interesting this morning that Collins has come out calling many of the allegations 'lies' and John Key has publicly defended both Collins and Ede.

These seem like dangerous positions to take considering that there seems to be pretty indisputable emails as the source of this, which Hagar is now saying he is considering releasing.

People like Hagar annoy me they believe they have a monopoly on what's right, he came across as a complete tosser on TV. If he is in fact in possession of private emails he has no right to publish them, he is being the Dirty Politics he is pontificating to be against.

Maybe Dotcom could leave NZ and take Hager with him.

What Hager actually said that he was going to talk to his source about getting another copy of the material and he would consider releasing it, as he had deleted his copies.  But he also said there was no more relevant material than was in his book.

Given that most of Hager's material has been disputed, if not completely disproved - for example the Rodney Hide "blackmail" - I don't think you can consider any of the emails\facebook chats "indisputable".  There's also no verification that the "source material" is unaltered.  Just as there is no verification that the hackers aren't politically motivated or aligned with a political party.

Given where this is currently going in the media, interviews with the "The Standard", the Greens making complaints to everyone they can, it looks like the only parties who will profit from this are the Greens and Internet Mana.  It's open knowledge that the "Anyone But Cunliffe" camp of Labour have released more damaging material to bloggers than National have.  If the Police do investigate the Green's complaint, Labour's lack security and leaky ship are going to become matters of public record.  That's not going to be good for Labour.

David Farrar has now concluded that Hager must have access to material physically stolen or copied from his office http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2014/08/ive_either_been_hacked_or_spied_on.html
