Considering we are about to pivot into something called a 'transition away from elimination', it's going to be a very interesting day for the Labour bros on social media.

In what way? Its been forced on them and all of you, and no doubt all of NZ will have cases before long. Perhaps they will be kind and blame Delta and not the few that let Auckland rip open

If so, is it really appropriate to be so gleeful about it? I thought we were all in this together.

I don't think there's much to be gleeful about in any of this, to be honest.

But I do take issue with tribal pundits on Twitter whose incomes or workloads aren't affected by lockdown lecturing others who have the nerve to suggest that ongoing, permanent lockdowns may not be a sustainable option in the long-term.

Fair enough. There are plenty of tribal pundits on both sides to go around.

Some of the claims that have been made about the impact of covid on NZ's suicide rate appear to be myth:

I'll say this now before we get the announcement:

This is a no-win situation. Whatever she announces, Aucklanders won't comply with. If she walks back, people will claim that everything was a waste of time.

I feel like we're at the point where we were always going to get to - a crappy decision that no one is really happy with - but I still don't envy her for having to make and front it.

L3 with allowed outdoor meetings at max of 10 people and two households involved. Did I hear that right? Sounds good to me.

Interesting comment; at the end of this (shortest poss. three weeks) they'll have a vaccine passport framework to announce.

Which likely means no easing of our hard border before the Labour Weekend holiday.

That's probably going to be fanciful.

I think the initial report was that treatment for suicidal ideation and attempts for youths had increased substantially. This was seized on as being an increase in youth suicide and blamed on the lockdown by certain groups with an agenda. This data shows that the total number of suicides was lower than previous years. This may be because of the lockdowns families spent more time together and perhaps parents were more in tune with the issues facing teenagers and more willing to get them help. More focus on mental well-being made people realise they needed to and could seek help.

Not sure I heard it right either... both the outdoor aspect & 'two families only' are going to be massively ignored. It feels like they're a bit naive of the fact that the risk of having visit from the police was a contributor to the reason they got large scale compliance - that's gone now. Maybe they've projected the vaccine rate will get ahead of the increase in cases that will follow it which is fine, here's hoping.

It was only two families gathering at once. Once you've said hello to cousin A and their household, you can move on to cousin B at another location. At least, that's what I got from it.

The piece I've bolded: Whilst it is most likely correct that there will be numbers that don't comply (as always seems to be the case), the same cannot be said for the entire population of Auckland, which is what your statement suggests. If that's not what you meant, don't say it.

It is what I meant. The ones who never complied won't suddenly start complying; the ones who wanted more Level 3/even Level 4 will feel they've been thrown to the wolves the buy-in from those trying to do the right thing will start to get exhausted very quickly given we still don't have targets or a timeframe for getting back to Level 2.

Like I say, it's a no-win situation.

I'm not disagreeing that it's a no win situation.

What you said was that Aucklanders won't comply with whatever was announced. I disagree, and I am very sure that most Aucklanders (or more correctly, Aucklanders and those in Northern Waikato (to the north of the southern Auckland border)) will absolutely comply.

Nationals new plan for Covid is in short, 70% eligible vaccines in NZ, 12+, and lockdowns end, we move to aggressive suppression. At 85% vaccinated travellers can arrive from low risk locations like Brisbane (who now have new cases) and have no isolation, higher risk countries are 7 day self isolation.

Good they put their cards on the table. 70% is a few tads low in my opinion. Im not sure how many low risk locations there are these days. Tuvalu? Townsville? Most countries seem to be high risk.

But its an alternative.

Basically Nats just pulled a bit lower number out of the hat. A bit similar like they were at the start of the whole pandemic when they did not want to close the borders.
So great the Nats were not in government during this period.
It's good to have plans, just without or low vax, planing is pointless.

You are no better placed to say that than I am, realistically, but I hope you are right.

We are still at the 'all carrot, no stick' bit of the response despite the best efforts of many and I suspect some of them will rapidly find the motivation to put their lives on an endless hold rapidly dries up as we get closer to Labour Weekend/Summer.
