Isn't fiscal mismanagement the stick that National keeps trying to beat Labour with? So Labour turns out to be fiscally prudent and now that is the worst thing ever because they didn't spend it all on more roads?

Labour weren't fiscally prudent though, they failed to deliver. There's a clear difference.

I aim to misbehave.

This year has shown that the NZ voter is not getting good value from our investment in Parliament. It is time those clowns in the Beehive did their job properly and give high value and integrity for their salaries. They have all let down all of NZ. Frankly I am considering not voting this year as they are all rubbish. Our ballot papers really need a voting option of

'None of the above'

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Labour didn't deliver the infrastructure it promised but certainly stuck to what it promised around fiscal policy.

It got debt to below 20% of GDP faster than was promised and all the policy last election was costed. National is rolling out totally uncosted fairy tales.

I find the idea that you can totally drop the ball on campaign policy, not incur the additional costs as a result and then claim you have less debt due to 'prudent management' a bit hard to swallow, frankly.

To quote a former prime minister where is the money national are promising to spend? I'd really like to see how they are planning to do this. At the moment their policies seem impossible and now they are complaining about the media being mean. Just release your alternative budget and show how this is possible.

I can recall Labour being challenged on the Kiwibuild figures, then insisting they were totally realistic, and them accepting they were not weeks after the election and changing them all by approx $50,000 upwards. So yes, I guess there was some scrutiny.

Again, on the $11bn black hole: it is easy to save money when you flub your policy delivery and walk away from your flagship policies. If you want to claim political incompetence as economic management, then feel free. I suspect it will not be quite so easy a sell this time around.

Most significant thing this week was definitely the NPS on car-parking minimums - Councils will now have to allow developments up to six stories in areas served by rapid transit. This is a huge deal. It vapourises NIMBYism in well-off central areas of Auckland that have things like trains and frequent bus services but have resisted (at a community level) the type of developments that those sorts of infrastructure can serve - often pushing development out into parts of the city with a fraction (if any) of the levels of service they enjoy.

Of all the things that Labour has (not) done this term, this might be the biggest and smartest thing they've done. I'm less of a fan of the idea of minimum parking requirements being done away with (not owning a car at all is wildly impractical and expecting public space to pick up the slack is mixed messaging), but focusing developments on the suburbs that have the infrastructure to handle them instead of picking stupid fights with places like Central East Auckland like what happened in the last round of Unitary Plan 'consultation' is a smart move for all concerned.
