I have a theory.

China doesnt want the US in Asia. They don't want a one Korea controlled by the south as SK is friendly to the US. Japan is as well, that is enough, China wants the East to be the The East, not the West rubbing shoulders. Russia would off course be happy with keeping the US out. I feel this is nothing to do with PRNK, they are a very very handy pawn. The three of them might want the US to go a bit far military wise. Could happen under Trump, who many feel was helped into power by Russia. Its just a power game between Russia and China vs the US. I'm sure China looks as themselves becoming the dominant power economically, sooner than later. They get on well with Europe. All of this leaving the US out in the cold.

All the news and hype about PRNK actually has very very little to do with them, in my opinion. I also see Russia and NATO are having their own military exercises near the Russian border. Russia also probably has aims for more then Crimea.

Embedding same from YouTube:

I'll go against the flow here. That could have happened to a lot of people with a busy schedule. It's a low bar with Reagan and Bush II, but I don't doubt similar absent movements from Obama and other 'young' presidents will be on film.

I really doubt this section 25 thing will fly. Unless maybe he's publicly busted with drugs or something like that.

I don't understand why everyone is so freaked out by the chubby one testing an ICBM. Even if the North Koreans could build a dozen of these, launching even one at the USA would immediately result in the DPRK being wiped from the face of the earth, even if that meant taking South Korea with it. So what is in it for Kim? He can bluster all he likes but even he is unlikely to do anything that dumb.

The Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) theory worked for the cold war, but it requires a degree of sanity and care from the protagonists. With the Kim dynasty, I'm not sure you can assume sanity. These are people who line up their imagined enemies in stadiums and execute them with antiaircraft cannons, mortars and flame throwers. If Chubby Kim thought he was about to be taken out by the USA he could well push the red button to ensure his place in history and wouldn't care about the consequences if he wasn't going to be around to see them.

This is off-topic, but I thought you were exaggerating, but the execution methods appears to true.

What Kim does is perfectly sane and rational. The consequences of crossing Kim Jong Un are more than you are prepared to pay. They are more than your family, or your whole country are prepared to pay. Kim is not going suddenly nuke the US just because it's Tuesday any more than Putin would. His objective is to stay in power until he dies, preferably of diabetes. He does that by having 20 million hostages. If the US attacks him, he'll execute them.

Simple as that.

TBH I'm a little disappointed in Kim's timing of the ICBM test. If he wanted to damage the USA/Trump, then it's a misfire as it was an act that will receive universal condemnation and probably dominate discussion, when there's a G20 (19 -lol) about to happen, many of the Trump regime's other actions should be coming under the microscope (climate, Saudi Arabia/Qatar, trade).

Sane and rational? Nah I think you are wrong and that the Kims are paranoid psychopaths who go far beyond what is required to hold power. They get up to stuff that other garden variety despots do not - be it bizarre executions, setting up concentration camps the size of cities, imprisoning entire extended families of enemies etc.

If paranoid Kim gets it into his diseased mind that it's all over and the US is about to take him out I wouldn't be at all surprised if he hit all the red buttons to go out in style.

Sure, but as in so many cases, if the question is asked "how did it come to this", trying to work forward from the USA version of events seldom allows for conciliatory actions, especially when it becomes partisan.

The US has sabotaged attempts at conciliation by previous US governments, sometimes out of fear of losing presence and influence in the region, but sometimes just out of spite.  IMO the present POTUS is probably more inclined to act from spite than any of his predecessors but YMMV.

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but if you look at pictures of Kim, I don't think he will have a very long life. He is so fat he can hardly stand and there is always a cigarette in his hand. Considering how little offense it takes to be horribly executed by him, and how easily he takes offense, I cannot imagine any physician in his right mind putting him on a regime of exercise and healthy food.
