There's no doubt that the National Party lost a *lot* of talent when Key, English, and Joyce departed. You might well disagree with their policy direction (or predilection for ponytails) but their political management was as good as Helen Clark's was, if not better.

I wonder if it's no great coincidence that succession planning was so poor in each case.

It may well be that National's next PM wasn't even a minister in the last government.

I have been a National voter for a long time and was hoping that Bill English would continue as PM. I believe that it is bad for a party and country to have a PM/Leader for a long time. National is suffering what Labour suffered post Helen Clarke and in history National in the post Keith Holoake era.

I felt Bill English should have stayed on for another year. He was clearly the best choice. He did an excellent job during the run up to the election. He was extremely knowledgeable and experienced.

They will work it out. Plenty of time yet....This is quite normal from my recollections of a party who until recently was in Government.

Coalition will have wobbles next year as well...just wait and see. Inflation will take off putting them under pressure that they are not familiar with.

I absolutely agree and he would have been a better choice to navigate Aotearoa through the approaching financial temptest. We sadly don't have that option and the alternatives are not good.

Some people think Bill English represented steady as she goes, but what he was really about was inflexibility and resistance to change. He was the catholic version of a fundamentalist, though he did not wear his religion on his sleeve, but he let it dictate his moral choices. He was resolutely opposed to any form of euthanasia, regardless of the pointless suffering forced on the incurably ill. He stated he would not countenance any relaxing of drug laws regardless of what the evidence said. His mind was made up and he didn't want to be bothered with the facts. For these reasons if no other, I would have voted against him.

Edited to add: Of course he also had positive qualities and would have done well in many specialist roles as a Minister or otherwise. I have no problem with that. I just wouldn't want him as leader.

I would conjecture that tomorrow Jamie-Lee Ross will be expelled from caucus, maybe expelled from the National Party, if he is expelled from the party I think he will remain in Parliament as an Independent. I would not be surprised if there is a leadership challenge in the near future, maybe Judith Collins having another bid for the top.
