The students and teachers would feel fairly secure once they got in the door. Something like getting on a big plane & being pretty much assured that there won't be anyone with a gun or knife to cause trouble. The present situation is crazy with kids going to school wondering if their school is to be the next to be hit with this.

 

 

Really you believe this?  I thought you were joking.  I've been through a few airports where there were soldiers with heavy weapons wandering around the terminal, check-in security where you're given the third degree, and that gives me the utter screaming nervous shytes.

Yeah! Maybe I am too trusting but seeing police and soldiers guarding places with big guns does not worry me. In Paris they have soldiers patrolling around in groups of three - all have rifles of some kind. Two places I saw them patrolling were under the Eiffel Tower, and at the Gare du Nord railway station.

In answer to your first question yes, because it's the least bad realistic option in the USA given that they have 300 million guns in private ownership, the vile influence of the NRA, Trump, & politicians who refuse to enact a huge change to gun laws. John Howard did a better job in Australia.

 

And second question absolutely no, I have never said that the lunatics should be allowed to keep their guns. If I were the President of the USA with absolute power they would have strict gun laws similar to Australia or NZ.

 

In New York they have implemented a form of airport security for schools & it surely is not working perfectly but it's better than not having it in my opinion.

 

My bottom line is that at least for five hours a day the kids in USA schools and their teachers could be made to feel safer than they do now. The kids in their schools have a right not to have to worry about maniacs getting  into their school and causing the carnage seen over and over. To have an experience somewhat similar to a NZ school.

It's bad but students have a much higher chance of being killed at home due to lack of safe storage regulations in most states. Massachusetts has pretty good storage requirements in place and the youth injury stats statistically valid to match. California, New York, Connecticut, some requirements but not as good have still seen stats improvements.

Imo that's the sensible place to go.

Texas where this happened has a law along the lines if your kid is injured because you stored less safe than a reasonable person would then you are responsible and liable for prosecution. Horse bolted. Anyway... also says you cannot be arrested until 7 days have passed. Prosecutions are rare for obvious reasons.

Texas has seen several proposals for safer storage maybe these will get going.

If you want to look at some real stats..look for total gun deaths in the US and suicide by guns eg in 2016 38,658 people died via guns.

 

Something like 21,000 people use guns to commit suicide in the US each year.

 

33,000 died in vehicles crashes in the US each year.

 

A hand full of student deaths isnt going to sway the legislators.

Fences stop casual intrusion only. Determined intruders simply go over, under or through a fence or wall with a minimal level of effort.

 

The Wall is a great idea, to gather the xenophobic thicko vote. Utterly useless for stopping illegal immigration.

How would this even be enforced, unless it's too late?


Here's an actual article. Does it sounds like they're trying to secure guns against curious children?

Same stats actually. Many of those are young people using an unsecured weapon owned by a parent. Legislation yeah agree it will be a slow road if at all for some places. NRA should try and get those stats down talking about the issue and promoting safe storage regardless.

Presumably you did not obtain the picture from that article. The article was published by a company selling safe storage solutions. Your picture does not qualify.

Additionally you quoted the article in part only which is a bit misleading.

I agree gun safes should be required, but it's at best a tiny part of the solution.

Again, how would gun safes be enforced?

Do you think US NRA members are going to allow random inspections of their gun safes by government agents?

The best case scenario is someone takes guns without the owner's knowledge, gets caught before using them, and the police add an additional charge, beyond theft.

The worst cases are too numerous to list, but include curious children blowing others brains out.

The US needs to require gun safes, age limits, enforce frequent training, remove guns from unfit people and felons, and register all guns.

I know none of this will happen within a decade.
