I have a feeling things are going to change somewhat once that's all counted - and I also have a feeling that, depressingly, Winston is going to need to be involved again 😕

Special votes are ones from outside of the electorate eh? Early votes aren't counted as special ones, right? I voted last Sunday but hope mine was counted last night.

just make Winston foreign minister , he was ok last time he did it, and keep him overseas most of the year .

gzt: I think an enrol-on-the-day vote is counted as a special vote just as it used to be.

Edit: I had some idea that was allowed again this year maybe not can't find it.

Oh no, I've been enrolled since 1994 - I was just curious as to whether my vote would be counted as a special one or not as it wasn't cast on the day.

He's actually the right sort of personality for Foreign Minister. Affable, outward going and enjoys the glad handing and overseas jollies.

The special vote area at my local was busy this year. If that was due to problems with the e-system I don't know. My easyvote thing was straightforward.

NZHerald says enroll-on-the-day was allowed at this election. I'm glad to see that come back. I'll assume those are counted as part of the special votes just as they used to be. That could be an interesting factor.

Some overseas media have mentioned that the previous election resulted in an overwhelming majority for Labour under Ardern so it's a massive turnaround. What they don't mention is that her opponent was Judith Collins.

I reckon I could have beaten Collins.

I think the international votes will shift to the right this time round. Lets not forget what happened to those of us who were locked out during COVID.

Collins drew the short straw. National had three different leaders in 2020 (four if you count interim leader Nikki Kaye). Did anyone else want the job at that stage? If Luxon wanted it then, he certainly didn't put his name forward.

Luxon only came into Parliament at the 2020 election.

gzt: I wonder if the number of 'wasted' list votes were the highest ever, on parties like Gunn and Tamaki and all the rest.

i tallied 4.5% approx

gzt: Special vote count is not complete until November 3rd. That's a long time to wait.

at a glance it seems there are 10 electorates where the difference looks to me to be less than 100 votes.

so it will be very interesting.

iirc he annoyed China and JA had to spend an entire year untangling the mess. no thanks with current international volatility.

someone told me if someone parked a ship and blocked fuel coming into NZ we run out of fuel in under 2 weeks.

One brilliant commentator gave, what I think is, an interesting observation of the election.

"The reason Labour lost so badly was that they tried to make people better, rather than make things better for people"

I wonder .......

still cant be worse than Nanaia Mahuta, she manged to get publicly rebuked by China and was really reluctant to  leave NZ which is bad for a foreign minister

Technofreak:

Likewise the true Greens (not the Left Wing Radical Greens) could acheive a lot by working with National. There are Teal coalitions elsewhere.

That would be like the Anglican Church teaming up with Richard Dawkins to promote ecumenical religion.  National does not believe in climate change. They say they do. But everything they do says they don't.
