Is this a new announcement?  (Can you provide a link?)

...or is it the re-positioning of the "billion" to include trees that would already have been (re)planted after felling activities? (I believe that this line was trotted out sometime late last year)

Either way - the new government does seem to be finding out that delivering on promises is somewhat more challenging than making them.

Was on the 8 o clock news this morning.

http://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2018/01/government-short-on-land-for-1-billion-trees-promise.html

The Government will only boost the current 50 million trees bring planted annually by 10 percent this year, Mr Jones says. That would bring the total to 55 million - well short of the target.

Bun in the oven.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

thanks :-)

Either way - as referenced in the story - the Forestry industry already plants 50mil trees annually to replenish their stock after felling.  The government is trying to use planting that was already happening before their policy was concocted as counting towards meeting their targets.

Remember, the Labour/NZFirst Coalition Agreement stated that there would be "a Billion Trees Planting Programme"  and Ardern's "Speech from the Throne" decreed that:

The New Zealand Forestry Service will be re-established and located in regional New Zealand. This government is committed to a new planting programme, planting 100 million trees a year to reach a billion more trees in ten years.

Still, I guess hitting 55% of your target sounds a lot better that hitting 5% of your target. So better start making everyone who took what you said "literally" feel a bit stupid for believing you...

But Ardern told reporters yesterday the Government was never going to plant 1 billion trees on its own.

“We’ve always been really clear. We see a role for the Forestry Service to work alongside those in the private sector to ensure we’re supporting the planting of those trees.”

God, spare us all from the press fawning over the new spawn for the next 18 months.

I guess on the plus side maybe she will spend less time in office rui..err running the country (and breaking promises to the nation.) On the downside the person likely to take over is probably worse.

So the Government is backtracking on their tree promises now. I can't recall an election where more promises were made and flagship promises broken. We are in Trump territory for things said vs things delivered.

I am wondering what possible justification the people here will come up with today for making this "ok"?

Surely this pretty much amounts to Fraud.

I don't think it's 'ok' for any government to make election promises it doesn't intend to keep. Key's no new taxes come to mind. I didn't think any of the following were 'ok' either:

That said, this is pretty normal behaviour by every government in every election. You keep trying to present it as if only Labour does this kind of thing, or does it much more grievously. At this moment I still prefer this government over the last one, and am prepared to wait a reasonable time (which you seem unable to do) before passing judgement.

The first link, by Duncan Garner, by the way, is just as scathing of Labour as it is of National. I'm not playing favourites here, I just think you are slightly obsessed with looking for things to bash this government with while ignoring or minimising the failings of the previous one.

Think about this for a moment: The last government got unelected for a reason, and it wasn't just Jacinda Ardern or even Winston Peters. A majority of people just did not want three more years of the same.

This is also very true :-)

Congratulations to the PM and her partner. Of course we will now have to suffer through all the misogynist commentary from ignorant males convinced that a pregnant woman cannot possible do a competent job. They ought to take a lesson from the wonderful Coen Brothers film Fargo, not that they will, of course.

Oh, neat.

And Ardern knew this back in October...  when she was negotiating the super-duper secret coalition agreement with Winston.

Well played!

And what possible difference does that make? A woman's reproductive status has nothing whatsoever to do with her other abilities.

I don't think that's true.

LOTS of NZF (and members) voters wanted a NZF and National Coalition.

BTW if your argument is that National did a "poor" job so it's ok for Labour to an even worse one, then you've sunk to a new low in debating skills.

Labour was supposed to be better, and so far, that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Almost every single flagship policy has been walked back.

BTW:

http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/a-new-study-suggests-that-baby-brain-is-real-/

To be fair, she pretty much made up her numbers and promises out of thin air it would seem, so it probably won't be possible to tell which is lies and which is anything else.

Could have made a difference when people were voting though.

Also, when Winston was deciding which side to support, though since he wants to be PM he might have though the chances were higher if she was not in the office as much.

You're right. It's politics and there's broken promises on all sides. That first article is actually pretty fair. It's easy to forget the grim future that National inherited in 2008. It's easy to say they dropped the ball in social issues, and they did. Maybe they could have done more sooner, but not much sooner.

Yes, I am a bit biased against labour, but they put out these policies such as the 'billion trees' with the simple intention of getting votes from people in those industries. To back-track so soon after the election calls into question their integrity.

Shane Jones says the Maori are hard to get onside, quoting Waitangi as an example. As if they didn't know that before the election. It was careless and flippant. Will they have the same attitude about their child poverty figures? (Treasury mistakes aside)
