SJB:

God forbid that I'd defend anything to do with Trump or his administration but if the boot was on the other foot the Democrats would be doing exactly the same thing and getting their candidate through the process any way they could.

Their system of government is irretrievably broken.

The Democrats had a perfectly good nomination at the last days of Obama. The Republicans blocked each and every way.

Yes that's true - and it's also true that their system is irretrievably broken.  In nobody's right mind should a SCOTUS appointment ever be rushed through when there's a credible allegation of attempted rape against him.  He could well remain a SCOTUS judge further into the future than that alleged incident was in the past.

His appointment when the sitting president is on public record condoning his own claims about sexual assault of women as a "conquest" is thoroughly disgusting.  And that's what conservatism has become.

Jesus wept. (He would have).

The Acme Traitor Lie Detector cartoon above has reminded me of a graphic I did a few months ago.  We have a weekly 'Something For The Weekend' thread on the Adobe Photoshop forum, where a source image is supplied, and people can make what they like of it using any software they choose.  It's a lot of fun, and I have improved my knowledge of Photoshop as a result of trying new things, and having to work out solutions to new problems. I have a couple of images in this weeks thread (one of which is an animation), but you'll see how the castle image came to mind from the Lie Detector. I was stoked to find the picture of The Queen shrugging like that.  It was a perfect fit for my picture gag.laughing

Feel free to join in if you enjoy making composites or digital illustration.

AKA I have today announced that my people, my beloved people, are being taxed, on now, pretty much all remaining Chinese goods that you buy. And parts of American made goods that you buy

Thank you

Washington Post - Trump may prefer a trade war to a deal with China

President Trump seems to be digging in for a full-fledged trade war with China.

On Monday, the White House announced that it will impose tariffs on an additional $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, a move that follows the apparent failure of recent talks between U.S. and Chinese officials. ...

Now, rather than cooling tensions, Trump is opting for escalation, seeing a potential trade war as a winning political strategy at home ahead of the November midterms and his own 2020 reelection bid.

This goes against the instincts of many senior Wall Street executives and even some White House advisers, who, though happy with Trump’s tax cuts, are less thrilled by his willingness to unleash chaos upon the global economy. ...

Its crazy re the trade war. 1), there is an issue with IP, I.m not uo to the play on that. 2) there is an issue with the trade deficit, with is roughly 5:1 in China's favour.

Re 2), who forces Americans to buy Chinese goods? If we MAGA then America can make many if not all of these goods, but they will be too expensive. So the more efficient country makes the goods. I'd love if the US banned 4/5 of Chinese imports. Trade deficit sorted. Bad for China. BAD for US citizens

Not Safe for Work - some graphic details.

'Least impressive sex I ever had': Stormy Daniels tells all about Trump in bombshell book

The book, titled "Full Disclosure," was obtained ahead of its Oct. 2 release by The Guardian newspaper.

There's enough intimate details of Trump's best friend that Melania's divorce lawyers will have everything they need.

I can hear Sarah Huckabee saying at a press conference: "The President strongly denies that 'Mister Happy' looks like a ..."

There's also an issue with what the US would want to impose on NZ as IP regulation - not excusing the Chinese and their antics - but they're not likely to ever make the US regulators happy.

Bilateral trade balances aren't important, overall trade balance is a bit important.  I run a huge trade deficit with my local supermarket, but they're not at risk of going broke and neither am I.

I have no idea what's going to happen here.  The US obviously has the upper hand on trade war if tariffs are going to be the sole response, as the US is far less exposed to reduction in exports to China than vice-versa. The Chinese do have other cards up their sleeves.  One is that they're the largest foreign buyer and largest holder of US Treasury bonds - if they stop buying US debt that would have a big impact on US interest rates and cost to fund the US deficit.  That would probably drive the US into recession, but that would be contagious - driving other countries which are Chinese markets into recession and harming China's interests - so I don't think they will. Long-term I don't think this is going to work for the US.  They want to reduce Chinese global influence, China's likely to gain more influence through trade deals elsewhere.
