Just to correct myself, he'll be a maximum security category. The odd burglar or druggie might manage to get stuff snuck in for them but the chances of pulling it off whilst on solitary confinement is certainly much lower.

Being exceptionally uncharitable, I wouldn't provide that. If he off's himself, that would be fine with me.

No doubt no expense will instead be spared in ensuring he doesn't though.

Sure, everything has it's pros and cons. They could just as easily delude themselves into cheering the amount of money that is spent in keeping him incarcerated.

Can we bill australia for holding this piece of crap? It all seems very one sided when they deport people who have lived there for years, if we're not deporting this winner I reckon they should have to pay for his imprisonment. Yeah, tit for tat but idc

At some point each country will have their notorious criminal exports -- you go down this kind of track, other people will do it to you. NZ isn't some big player in the international scene. We go all nihilistic and against international norms, there's only going to be one winner: not us. It's simple enough to work out with some intellectual engagement.

And if some people want to talk about being victim-focused (I don't agree with this -- the justice system should be about doing justice), take your beliefs to their logical conclusion. I am sure at least some of the victims want to see ongoing justice being meted out here.

I'm sure you're right, and I freely admit I am totally biased against this monster and that is what drives my thought process, I'm not looking at it logically, but then I don't think Australia do either when they deport some of the people they have in the past back here

You're not wrong. All that I am calling out is try to rise above this guy. And this is where I think the life without parole sentence was a moral failure. The statement to him is transparently that he's no longer a person -- no matter what he does to redeem himself or not, the outcome is the same (I do suspect he is basically irredeemable) I also don't think we as a society should deliberately seek the rather morbid satisfaction of having him die behind bars. Release him when he's 90 and no longer a threat to anyone and he will still be a nobody to anyone sensible. Instead, this sentence has given him an elevated martyrdom as being the first to be sentenced for to serve the rest of his life.
