“It comes very close to the statutory definition of witness tampering,” he said.

I am surprised Kellyanne has not left the White House yet, or divorced her husband. They seem to have very different views on her boss.

If the US economy contracts, then that's going to set a challenge for Republicans to argue that it's the Democrat's fault.  I'm highly confident that's what they'll do, as it would be consistent with what they've done for the past few decades.

Breaking: CNN reports that Mueller has recommended no jail for Flynn due to the 'substantial assistance' he has given to the investigation. Also, Stone pleading the Fifth.

I'm not sure what a Republican is anymore. They used to be people who believed in conservative values like honesty, decency and fair play. Now they seem to have sold out to Trump’s distorted ‘win at all costs’ mantra. In Wisconsin and Michigan they are changing the rules to undermine the result of a democratic election. I guess that means they don’t believe in democracy any longer. I saw one Republican official with twisted features loudly proclaim that he wasn’t about to allow any ‘liberal agenda’ there. What voters want doesn’t seem to matter much to him. Some narrow Republican victories elsewhere also seem suspect, while other elections have been the result of blatant gerrymandering and voter repression. And now, in South Carolina, a major voter fraud investigation is underway. Republicans used to believe in ethics and a fair contest of ideas. But I doubt an old-school Republican like George HW Bush would recognise much in the mean-spirited cabal now claiming the label.

As Mueller closes in, another scandal that has emerged deserves closer attention. Like Nixon before him, Trump has surrounded himself with corrupt officials. In this case public attention is being focused on Trump’s Labour Secretary Alexander Acosta, who has been accused of the worst kind of class justice when he was a prosecutor. The case has to do with billionaire hedge-fund manager Jeffrey Epstein, who was accused of abusing, raping and trafficking children on a vast scale but had friends in high places and was given an extremely soft plea deal. I can’t repeat the whole story here but read the link. It is horrific.

These are the kinds of people Trump surrounds himself with. In the case of Nixon, even his vice-president barely escaped prison for accepting bribes, and his attorney general, the highest law officer in the land, did go to prison for his crimes. He was joined by numerous other officials and aides. Trump, like his good friend the brutal crown prince of Saudi Arabia, may avoid a similar fate by throwing his minions under the bus, but he will not escape the humiliation and rejection that drove Richard Nixon from office.
