I remember quite a bit of that during their campaign too, Luxon saying something-or-rather was National policy, then it was pointed out it wasn't, resulting in him walking back him comments a day or so later. That happened more than once. Made me think he had no clue what he was doing or saying. Now I see much more in the way of scripted responses so someone must have said something to him.

Even as a CEO you can't just walk around deciding policy on the spot. There's a board to answer to. You'd think someone with his long successful career would know that.

Intelligence? Experience? But he regularly reminds us of his business experience. So like the "strong, stable government" hourly statement, it must be true

A Winston spurned is a lesson learned.

it looks to me the tail is wagging the dog

Winston Peters is playing Luxon and holding him at ransom

might be doing so for the next 3 years

It's never a good omen for a National Party leader to have Matthew Hooton tearing them up.

I think it means Hooten is not on the current leader's media consulting payroll not much more.

So far we have Tova and now Hooten deciding to rip into Luxon for the negotiations despite neither one of them being able to actually articulate what the issues are or where the sticking points might be.

They're competing for clicks in a vacuum because there's nothing of substance for them to actually talk about. How that becomes a failure on Luxon's part I have no idea.

The vacuum is entirely of Luxon's own making.

But it's not quite true to say that Hooton at least is unable to articulate what the issues are. He mentioned several specific examples: Act prepared detailed documents which he didn't read; he wants to talk all the time rather than listen; he didn't ask what Act & NZF wanted out of the sessions before handing them a document with his deal in it.

Granted, it's possible Hooton is making up complete BS but if he is then it's very specific BS, as opposed to vague hand-waving Luxon doesn't know what he's doing BS.

The negotiations are happening behind closed doors. We generally don't get blow-by-blow updates of the negotiations no matter who is forming the government. It's quite common for party members to vote on accepting agreements that the public doesn't see - the Greens and NZ First both do this, from memory.

I'm not sure what the expectation is here but I'm also not sure whatever they think should be happening is that realistic.

Agree

Its not about the negotiations, its about all the other antics of Luxon's that he's shown since the campaign started. Been listed often here so I won't repeat them again. Negotations wise, its approaching the documented average period, so no news there. If it was sealed end of next week, again no real drama. Its just all his other stuff. Seymour on the other hand has been quite the professional IMO

Yep credit where credit's due. Clearly I disagree with 100% of his politics and hope they all go down in flames but he has been approaching this with great professionalism as far as anyone can tell.

Badsed on media reports from the leaders today, it appears reasonably likley that the deals will be sealed soon. Early next week is my estimate. Keen to see if ACT push themselves into being a real player, or remain the usual bit player. They wanted real chnage not just a government change
