The New York Times - A Divided House Endorses Impeachment Inquiry Into Trump

WASHINGTON — A bitterly divided House of Representatives voted Thursday to endorse the Democratic-led impeachment inquiry into President Trump, in a historic action that set up a critical new public phase of the process and underscored the toxic political polarization that serves as its backdrop.

 

The vote was 232-196 to approve a resolution that sets out rules for an impeachment process for which there are few precedents, and which promises to consume the country a little more than a year before the 2020 elections.

 

It was only the third time in modern history that the House had taken a vote on an impeachment inquiry into a sitting president.

 

Two Democrats broke with their party to vote against the measure, while Republicans - under immense pressure from Mr. Trump to shut down the impeachment inquiry altogether - unanimously opposed it.

 

Minutes after the vote, the White House press secretary denounced the process as “a sham impeachment” and “a blatantly partisan attempt to destroy the president.” ...

 

TRUMP CONFIDENT THAT HIS IMPEACHMENT WILL GET HIGHEST EVER TV RATINGS

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, Donald Trump boasted that the television ratings of his impeachment will be higher than any other impeachment in history.

“Everywhere I go, people tell me that when I'm impeached, they’re going to watch it,” he said. “The ratings are going to be through the roof.”

He said that he expected his impeachment ratings to be “many, many times” the size of the audience for Bill Clinton’s impeachment, in 1998.

“It’s not even going to be close,” Trump said. “The ratings for Bill Clinton’s impeachment were a joke.”

Asked about the recent impeachment of the former South Korean President Park Geun-hye, Trump said, “Did anyone even watch that one? That was Korea. Nobody cares.”

As for the impeachment of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, he said, “I didn’t hear about that one. I don’t follow Brazil. I like Argentina. I saw ‘Evita’ many, many times. Andrew Lloyd Webber did a great job. Millions and millions of people loved it. But that was a Broadway show, not an impeachment.”

Even though he anticipates “just terrific” ratings for his impeachment, Trump said that he did not expect the media to provide an honest accounting of his audience size.

“They’re going to lie and say that a lot of people who watched my impeachment didn’t watch, and that’s going to be very bad and unfair, but it’s not going to change the fact that my impeachment will be a great impeachment, a really beautiful impeachment,” he said.

The New York Times - The ‘Whimpering’ Terrorist Only Trump Seems to Have Heard

WASHINGTON — It was a vivid scene worthy of the ending of a Hollywood thriller, the image of a ruthless terrorist mastermind finally brought to justice “whimpering and crying and screaming all the way” to his death. 

 

But it may be no more true than a movie script.

 

In the days since President Trump gave the world a graphic account of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s last minutes, no evidence has emerged to confirm it. 

 

The secretary of defense, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the regional commander who oversaw the operation that killed the leader of the Islamic State all say they have no idea what the president was talking about. ...

 

According to the Washington Post, Trump's wall is full of holes. Drug and people smugglers are cutting through it as fast as it can be built. They are also going over it. Only truly stupid people (!) think a physical wall can keep anyone out. If it can be built, it can be penetrated. As much smarter people have pointed out, an effective barrier would be one that makes use of many techniques together. A wall is simply a very dumb idea that can be comprehended by very dumb people. It is the immigration equivalent of the War on Drugs.

It's important that Americans are still able to get their nose candy from South America.
