An article from US NPR - usually not a sensationalist media site.

If this is moderate perception of what's going on, then NZ needs to tread very carefully.

The US has significant influence on NZ, and at the moment an untrustworthy leader prone to knee-jerk diplomacy.

What if Trump offered to sign a completely free and open trade agreement with NZ. On the condition that NZ imposes tariffs on all imports from China. In effect, forcing NZ to choose sides.

Sure, this sounds crazy. But people also said that Trump would never get elected.

The Chinese market is bigger so we'd stick with our existing FTA I'd imagine.

It would not be a free and open trade agreement if it had those conditions and we should say no.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
