I find it harder and harder to get indignant about anything anymore. There is so much evil and injustice in the world and things just seem to keep getting worse and worse. Politics in America and Britain and elsewhere fill me with a sense of hopelessness. Refugees continue to drown by the hundreds in the Mediterranean and be slaughtered in Syria. The bad guys seem to be winning everywhere.

So it takes something extra to get me upset these days. Here it is: Some madman, some crazy person, or god knows what, has just shot up a garlic festival in California. A garlic festival, for christake! An event devoted to family fun and the enjoyment of food. What kind of diseased individual decides to shoot up a garlic festival? The sheer absurdity of it drives me to despair.

There was a time when I could have at least reassuringly told myself that kind of thing doesn't happen here. But of course we have now lost that innocence. So lock your doors, huddle inside, never venture out, live in fear, go easy on the garlic. What a f-ing world this has become!

Yet another terrorist act by a neo fascist "alt-right" character.

Meanwhile, Trump's desperately trying to get the mythical "antifa" declared to be a terrorist organisation, despite no evidence of anyone identifying as "antifa " having committed a terrorist act.

The Onion article hasn't been updated for the latest one, but still provides the best commentary on the general apathy for their policymakers when it comes to trying to do something about this sort of thing.

The really crazy thing is - metal detectors at the entrance to a garlic festival. Shooter had to avoid these and cut through a wire fence to gain access. What the? What the? What the? Dystopia much?

Perp purchased weapon at a gunshop in Nevada who had this to say:

BuzzFeed: "We feel so sorry for the Families of the CA shooting. May the POS rest in Hell," the owner of Big Mike's Gun and Ammo said in a Facebook post that was later edited. "Maybe people need to be 21 to buy?"

Stats show 4x as much gun crime by under 21. California changed to 21. Nevada is at 18 for that particular weapon.

Don't like quoting myself as a general rule, but make an exception.

Just when I thought I'd seen it all, America delivers even more:

In a message to his more than 300,000 Twitter followers, Adams urged any Gilroy shooting witnesses to make an account on an app he co-founded that allows experts to make money by discussing issues over video calls. By signing up for the app, “Interface by WhenHub,” Adams claimed, witnesses could “set your price” and make money by selling interviews about the mass murder, while Adams’ company took a 20 percent cut.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley: "I really want to -- think about that minute. The shooter was able to kill nine people and injure 26 in less than a minute."

Think about that the next time you go shopping, or attend a religious service, or enjoy an outdoor concert. Lunatics everywhere are queuing up to see who can achieve the highest kill score.

Dayton shooter background: (trigger warning)

CNN: A fourth person, who also asked not to be named for privacy reasons, said, "All I know is there was a list of violent actions and a list of names including mine." She said some of the names were female students who, like her, turned him down for dates. She said Betts often simulated shooting other students and threatened to kill himself and others on several occasions. "He loved to look at you and pretend to shoot with guns, guns with his hands," she said. Another former classmate, who was not on the list, said that he met Betts through a "friend of a friend." He said whenever they hung out, Betts would talk about violence and use harsh language about women, like calling them "sluts." Betts' former classmates told CNN that they recalled Betts being removed from the school for at least a year, but that he later returned to Bellbrook High.

Meanwhile in Chicago they had so many shooting incidents one of the hospitals had to close its ER as it was full.

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/08/04/us/chicago-mount-sinai-hospital/index.html

It isn't just an issue with the mass shootings, in some areas they have numerous individual incidents which don't make the news. But once again the easy access to firearms plays a role.

While thats a great article it's not actually accurate.  If you look at the american continent as a whole (north and south) it's a fairly violent place.  Mexico is ruled by drug cartels, people are kidnapped every day.  Mass shooting happen all the time.  People are dissolved into vats of acid etc etc.  Colombia has had a 50 year civil war with similar results.  Argentina and Brazil are slight better but there are places that even the police won't go, life is cheap and death is common.  The only place that seems fairly peaceful is Canada.

Lined up against all that the USA doesn't look that bad.  That's not to say it's good or they shouldn't try and improve.  We all know they are a slightly mad, violent country.

I think a lot of the reporting is sensational and slightly racist.  For example gang shootings are excluded from mass shooting statistics because everyone thinks poor black people killing each other is normal.  Anything involving poor black people is automatically a gang shooting.  The horrible mass killings in Mexico are never reported in our media because well, they are only Mexicans...

So don't believe the news.  I am not sure what you should believe but it's not the social or main stream media.
