So has been interesting reading while this has been taking place. So much ars*e covering is not funny and to make it worse its so obvious. It's ok though nothing will happen to them I guess.

Maybe next time Nicky Hager says something is rotten in New Zealand the right-wing reactionaries will have to take him seriously. They can start with a big apology for blackening his credibility over the years.

I agree that it looks like there was an incident in which there were civilian casualties resulting from NZ military activity in Afghanistan. This is playing out as part of an inquiry and in turn may be generating further commercial success for Hager. What the inquiry has exposed so far is that military and civil servants acted questionably. The likely result may be a resignation or two but no other permanent change seems likely.
There is no shock-horror-heads-must-roll element to this. In any war there are always going to be civilian casualties and in this respect the war in Afghanistan does not rate a mention compared to the Syrian conflict or many other past wars. The reason this whole episode has come to light is not to highlight the horror Afghan civilians have experienced but to expose the fact that an incident involving NZ military was suppressed. That sells books in NZ, which in turn is why the book 'Hit and Run' (along with predecessor publications for Hager) was published.
So Hager has a track record of using public controversy to sell books. As such there is always a furore which eventually blows over with no lasting effects.
Whenever Hager publishes a new book, its launch is carefully orchestrated for maximum commercial effect. The fact that he publishes so rarely is testament to the fact that issues worthy of his commercial attention are few and far between. Each new book he publishes is therefore to be treated with suspicion because of his purely-commercial motives in the past.

Happens with every single book he has published. Government reaction is to deny, cast him as a conspiracy theorist etc. Media seems to lap it up. I don't think any of his central claims have ever been shown to be false. Of course he is going to co-ordinate his book launches for maximum impact and sales. That is the reality of commercial publishing. It doesn't counter any of the information in the books.
governments all around have done and will commit far worse atrocities for some unknown agenda. I think the agenda in this very instance was to kow tow to the US. probably believed US intelligence and just did as told.
