This item from RNZ incenses me. It actually belongs in the health forum but I have put in politics for obvious reasons.

Adult women of child-bearing age with very painful medical conditions are being denied surgery that would relieve their considerable suffering because the surgery would remove their ability to have children and (male) surgeons are taking it upon themselves to decide what is best for them whether they like it or not.

I find it hard to believe that this kind of thing is still happening in this day and age. It seems straight out of the 1950s. Surgeons used to believe they were god and apparently in this country they still think that. These are adult women making a rational decision about their reproductive future but no no, doctor knows best.

The doctors in question apparently can't get their heads around the notion that any woman might actually not want to have children, especially if the price of that is excruciating ongoing agony throughout their reproductive years. Never mind what the women want. Never mind that they might just have priorities other than mindless reproduction.

The article doesn't go further into the reasoning of the surgeons, but I strongly suspect they are probably of the catholic faith. During the euthanasia debate, this emerged as doctor groups opposed to the referendum were held up to the light. It seems that most palliative care specialists and hospice medical personnel hold this peculiar belief, though they are reluctant to admit it.

Whatever the reason, this kind of arrogance is unprofessional, to say the least. These surgeons deserve to be publicly humiliated and they should be deeply ashamed.

No I would not have expected this in 2021:

Article: "I've been told a lot of times by usually male GPs that in order to get a hysterectomy you have to be at least 35, you have to have two children, you have to have a husband, and all of these strange medical loopholes that really make no sense to me.

I wonder if one aspect is GPs guessing the criteria for public health procedures instead of actually submitting a referral. I have a feeling that happens a lot. Either way it's a bad outcome for women.

As for this surgeon:

Article: After reluctantly agreeing to the surgery, he said something that has always stuck with her. "He said that he would cry for me on the operating table. [It] made me feel really guilty about the whole thing.

This guy should be censured at minimum. Disgusting and unprofessional behaviour. What's worse is, he's basically saying he's not mentally competent to perform the operation in a professional manner and then going ahead with it.
