Why don't people vote in general elections?
- don’t know how to vote
- didn’t have time
- no government does any good
- no party had good policies
- didn't like the party leader
- always vote party X but they are bad this year, and won't for party Y

I aim to misbehave.
Another reason if enrolled to vote, it also puts you on the list that can be called up for Jury duty, so some people don’t enroll for this reason.
"Why have I received a jury summons?
If you’re enrolled to vote, you can be randomly selected (‘summoned’) for jury service."

gzt: One year I worked Saturday and more or less forgot about it. I'd be interested to know the proportion of people working six+ days a week who vote regularly.
You didn't think to cast a special vote? A couple of times I've known in advance that I wasn't going to be home on voting day so I've cast a special vote a few days in advance.

General election turnouts NZ are still pretty good
" In 2020 82.2% of people who were enrolled voted (2017 - 79.8%). This is the highest turnout since 1999 (84.8%)."

Eitsop: So if the made it a public holiday would that get more people?
They have made it now so can vote up to two weeks before election day.
And even on public holidays a lot of people still have to work, so don’t think make much difference.

The two weeks bit is under when can vote.
I would think there are a few categories -
* No one is worthy of voting for as they are all the same (ostensibly kinda correct between labour (prior to JA) / National, less so with Greens / Act thrown in).
* Too busy - with booths open 2 weeks in advance, less of an issue.
* General laziness, that you actually have to go to a polling booth and make a conscious effort to do something rather than just sit on your phone and do it electronically may be a step too far for some.
* Protest "vote" of not voting for anyone - similar to no one being worthy.
