Apparently huge queues have been forming at some polling places due to demand and problems with the electronic system. The Electoral Commission has announced that everyone waiting to vote will be able to do so, even if it is after 7 pm. Don't know if this will affect the live coverage.

Don’t think it will affect live coverage, as advance votes may have already been counted and ready to roll out. It may just mean things may get interesting later in the evening than earlier in the night.

Is the "electronic system" only used for special votes (e.g. out of electorate), or is it the standard way of voting in some areas? Voting has always been paper-based for me (including this year).

Edit: Stuff has some details.

An Electoral Commission spokesperson said there was an issue with the electronic version of the electoral roll that would not impact most people’s voting experience, but it may cause some delays for people casting a special vote at the busiest voting places.

Having just listened to the news, it’s the internet-based access to the electronic version of the electoral roll that they’re having difficultly with. This only affects those making special votes, as most of these are for people voting outside of their electorate (hence why they need to view the roll from another electorate).

All issuing officers taking votes for the local electorates (at least the general and Māori rolls, and often ones right near) will have hard copy rolls for those electorates so won’t be affected.

TBH, I didn’t know they used an electronic roll; I used to work at/manage a polling station each election until the last one, and up until then the only pieces of digital technology used were a calculator to add votes and a phone to call in results!

When I voted a couple of weeks ago, they met me at the door with an app on their phone.

I hadn't received my EasyVote card, so they used the app to look me up on the electronic roll, asked my name, address, and month of birth, to confirm that I was me. They wrote the page and line number on a card which I took to get my voting papers.

Think they only need the electronic roll if you haven't got your EasyVote card, or special votes.

I cast a special vote on Thursday, it was pen and paper.

I took my wife to vote today and again it was pen and paper.

No electronics seen as part of the voting process.
