I'm having issues with my Voyager Fibremax internet connection in Island Bay, Wellington. Have spoken with the (super helpful) call center and a ticket has been lodged, but just wanted to see if anyone else was affected or just me?

Essentially I cannot even browse the internet. Websites refuse to load (some websites very occasionally load text or frames, but do not load properly). While I appear to have an internet connection, it seems as though it is extremely slow (so slow it does not work). The ONT has both the power and GPON light lit green, and the router displays a WAN light. My PC shows it is connected to the internet, I can perform pings, nslookups and tracerts, but all feel as though they are performing extremely sluggishly. It appears as though the connection is so slow/congested/subject to packet loss it does not work.

Packet loss (using ping -n 100) is over 40% packet loss.

Trouble shooting steps so far:

- tried two separate routers
- tried three separate computers, each directly cabled by ethernet (different cables) to the router
- tried different DNS
- switched to a purely IPv4 connection
- performed a staggered start of ONT and router

Things were all working normally up to 18.30-19.00 today or thereabouts.

Anyone else affected?

Are you still using the Edgerouter? If so, have you got TCP MSS Clamping enabled?

set firewall options mss-clamp interface-type pppoe
set firewall options mss-clamp mss 1452
set firewall options mss-clamp6 interface-type pppoe
set firewall options mss-clamp6 mss 1432

Thanks Michael. No, the Edgerouter got retired a while back (I couldn't get IPv6 to work well, and parental controls that didn't require CLI config changes became desirable). Right now, I've substituted in a HG659 just to confirm that it really isn't anything at my end but I have been using a Cambium R201 recently (for said parental controls).

Maybe something to do with the power cut in parts of Island Bay last night around 11.30.

Thanks @VygrNetworkMonkey. Everything was back working this morning - either some engineering wizardry behind the scenes or Just One of Those Things. Thanks to Keith in your call center - he was super to deal with.

@Eva888 it was down before the power cut, though it's possible the power cut was part of the issue (or resolution - VygrNetworkMonkey turning off and turning on again the power to the suburb? 😁).

It does however turn out that having smart devices (lightbulbs in particular) with both no wifi and no power at the same time produces suboptimal results. When the power was restored (midnight? 1am?), all the wifi bulbs in the house came on at full brightness since they couldn't restore to their previous state. Unhappiness all around.

Glad to hear it's all sorted!

I can say, with 99.95% certainty, that I didn't turn the suburbs power off and on again... I think!
