mattwnz: I realise it is in the legislation but what is the whole reasoning that led to churches etc being tax free. I am guessing it is because they did a lot of free work on the community. But it's this sort of thing still relevant in the 21st century? Especially how many are run like businesses with CEOs etc and paid staff

Yeah, I believe that's the reasoning too. It was probably sensible when the vast majority of people were members of some organised religion or other, and the churches did play a significant role in looking after the poor and needy. But nowadays, neither of those things is true.

I say tax the churches, and pay them for the good works that they do.

I suspect the Sallies would get a fair amount of their money back, whereas the Catholics would disappear their profits overseas.

gzt:
Strip Destiny Church from tax free status

Can anyone outline what practical difference would result?

One less pair of silly sunglasses for Brian Tamaki?

I have had friends on the receiving end of the salvation army charitable trust. I had a friend who was addicted to drugs and had been for 10 years he asked the salvation army for help and they helped him 3 years later he is still clean.

They do alot of good in the community and alot of people in the church are very passionate about helping others, some churches like destiny are money grabbing but not all should be put under the same banner.

Yea, everyone's all against the Salvo's, but they'll happily walk around with their iPhones etc conveniently forgetting they use slave labour in 3rd world countries to make them.  But sure, I think the Salvo's once said something bad about Gay people, boycott them.

(For the avoidance of doubt - I'm sure my Nexus was made using slave labour. But I'm not calling for the Salvo's, or anyone else, to have their status revoked)

It's about sending a message that what they're saying/standing for is unacceptable and preventing such situations in the future from either this or any other orgnaisation.

And secondly, it would strip them of their tax free status, therefore essentially increasing the costs involved to run their "charity"/reducing their annual surplus, etc.

Governments in some countries apply sanctions to community organisations they don't like. For instance, a charitable organisation criticising the government on human rights or whatever, or for instance LGBT support organisations. It is not a good idea for this reason.

So, remove that status for all, or leave it as it is.

But my question about the practical difference it would make to Destiny and others has a different basis: I assume they would already pay FBT for instance on the holiday and any other items that ahem the Church gifted to Tamaki. What taxes would they pay that they do not already?

The Sanitarium case is a bit clearer, after removal they would pay corporate tax before distributing profit.

Well Donald Trump doesn't pay tax either. I don't think his apartments count as churches.

And not long ago, landlords didn't need to either.

No doubt the priests/e-meter readers at Scientology will be on full alert about this ; ).

Sanitarium... was news to me, but Google led me to http://m.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11406105 which says they ALSO received $4.2 million of government grants too, with a $3 million "net surplus for the year" 😳

FWIW a am a Christian myself and do think the tax free status of churches allows for much good work in this and other countries, and believe it's my right to say "gay is wrong" as my Bible says this too... just as it's YOUR right to say "LGBT" is an acceptable life choice. Tamaki blaming Gays for earthquakes is not any more valid than some who blame "Christians" or "Muslims" for hate crimes... stupid people are just stupid!

However, "promoting religion" isn't up to "us" to decide, as Scientology, Chreatiionism, Muslim, Evolution and even UFO followers all accept their belief on "faith" (religion) and should all get the same tax breaks and free speech protections that we all need to have in a country of acceptance and tolerance.

If Destiny paid tax, the government could spend more on social good, and Brian Tamaki spend less on boats, motorbikes, overseas trips for his wife, or those ridiculous bespoke suits that make him look like a LA pimp.

Corporate tax. Tithes become taxable income for a start.

I don't normally post non-tech subjects, but when it comes to [censored] [censored] of the vulnerable...

I signed.

What basis in law do you think this will achieve anything other than make signers feel good about themselves?

I found the petition a bit odd myself.

Kind of like a petition that is created to protest against child abuse or crime or whatever.   Something the majority would agree to sign but pointless nonetheless.

 Had already signed.

+1 for the posts saying remove all tax exemptions for churches / religious groups. Better yet just remove all churches / religious groups :-P

+1 that signing this will probably do bugger all other than make me feel better.
