I'm looking for info on IP Eftpos terminals that have big roll of cheap paper.

Currently a barrier in our local dairy to moving to IP only is the cost of the paper.

I'm told that many of the newer terminals use a small roll of paper which is three times the cost of the rolls in their current dial up version and less than half the size.

The problem for the dairy is that they sell a lot of mobile top ups (which they only make $0.40c commissions on) so giving out 25cm of paper is just to expensive.

I'm also told that paper costs are actually a barrier to selling top ups with some dairies in my area not selling top ups at all.

They also don't like having to change the roll twice a day.

So I'm keen to hear anything you can say about what terminals these guys should be looking at, what they cost and what the paper costs.

If this is your business or you're a vendor and would pref to contact me off list then please feel free to use the email button.

If you're a user and would pref to not put your experiences in public then off list would be great.

I'm keen to understand the ToC, up front costs and all the obvious stuff.

My 2c. Most customers do not want these terminal prints from any dairy/coffee/snack retailer and see them as an annoyance.

So many dairies do not ring up sales on the register anyway so you wonder what they need the print for anyway. As a dairy customer I would prefer a scanner and a large price per item display. Unlike in other environments display would be more popular with retailers if it did not have till integration lol.

I'm sure it is a challenging environment to supply for many reasons - you will get no argument from me there!

My understanding is that most of the newer terminals give the retailer an option to print the second reciept.
As for mobile top ups, quite some time ago the 'e-pay' type companies used to provide free rolls for their terminals however I suspect that has dissapeared now that they are intergrated in to one terminal thesedays.

If the dairy retailers were switched on, they would upsell / encourage multiple purchases by way of POS promo's.
Anyhow, the cost of 'stationary' is deductable anyway, it's an expense.

In this area it's as much a question of the dairy owner keeping an eye out not to loose $5 of stock each time some of the locals drop in for a mobile top up.

While stationary is deductible, the problem is that when the GP is only 40 cents, there's just not much to deduct from.

The conversation with my neighbour moved on to his thoughts on the smokes now being all locked up with nothing to promote them at all.  He thinks this is great because it reduces his chance of being held up for expensive stock even though he now sells less.

I see what you're saying, but I think you're not understanding the dynamics of the community that many in the dairy market are dealing with.

Moving to IP would save him a couple of phone lines, but his current concern is the cost of paper just eating any profits and causing more work for him, hence why I'm looking for a solution with big rolls of cheap paper.

Hear what you are saying..
However a couple of points;
1) Im Indian.... i.e. know all about the intricate details of the 'industry' (que all the stereo type jokes) :-)
2) The doors on the tobacco cabinets wont stop both robbery and burglary (and the rates of these incidents continue to climb.
3) It's not proven that the doors on tobacco units have reduced sales (supported by global research), perhaps this particular retailer is being beaten by a competitor stores pricing or doesnt carry stock weight / brand range that smokers tend to notice when choosing their regular locations for purchasing tobacco.
4) Agree IP based telephony will save the dollars and perhaps that saving can be invested into the paper.
5) I've seen first hand groups of convenience store retailers banding together to get bulk pricing deals on paper rolls. Perhaps a shop around the paper suppliers is in order.
6) Its most likey the customers frequenting for mobile top ups / phone cards are also spending in other areas of the store at other times or even the same time.

Anyway, its not about the smokes... its about the paper costs. As mentioned above you already have the answer in cost savings with regards to IP telephony and good luck with the paper roll bargan hunt.

@Don, I'm sure with your "i.am.a.can.do.kiwi.nz" attitude, that retro fitting a giant paper roll holder to an EFTPOS machine would be no trouble :)

Shop around. We have an IP only eftpos machine, and I can't remember offhand what we pay per roll, but I've been through four suppliers - now paying a quarter of what we used to.

if speed isnt an issue (and it seems not if using dial up now) get a webnic from smartpay - $12.50 per month and it will convert your dial up eftpos to ip - basicly it is similar to an ATA, but it encrypts and decrypts the transaction locally on the fly. keeps it all encrypted across the internet, just needs DHCP

Hmmmm

I assume this is what you're talking about?  WebNAC (not webnic).

Looks very cool.  I'll give them a call.

Thanks

You could always just run it over VoIP with an ATA.
