The new PayPal app for Android (not sure about other platforms) seems to bring PayPal payments as an option for NZ retailers:



Seems interesting and I guess would be a problem for newcomers/startups such as YQ...

I'd rather have mobile NFC payments than Paypal. I don't know what it is specifically, but I just don't trust Paypal.

I have no problem with Paypal and trust. Problem with NFC is the time it's taking to arrive - it's always coming but never here.

Vodafone's trial seems to have all but disappeared from the face of the planet and the other players aren't coming forward. Microsoft added NFC payments/SIM authentication to Windows Phone but I am told no one can get hold of someone to explain the APIs or use it. Snapper would have a good chance but failed to grab the mobile market with the whole Android fragmentation.

Credit card companies are well positioned to get this going but people distrust contactless payments - "no PIN or signature?"... Paypal requires you to login to pay so a few would think it's safer than contactless...

No thanks.
You watch the surcharge for Paypal. Them with their stupidly high margins.
Would rather NFC payment on a phone where its a virtual wallet..

I remember reading a recent local article, imploring the banks to get their own system in place for mobile payment, so that at least the costs/surcharges remain in-country (yeah yeah I know how many actual NZ banks there are...) rather than going to the overseas companies (CCs and PayPal)

Also notice there's a big push for convenience/experience. It is not only about "payment without friction" it's about "order ahead, get in, pay, get out" without the waiting.

Different approach, similar to what YQ proposes...

I also asked Westpac about theirs in May: https://twitter.com/WestpacNZ/status/467071884585357312

So far, nothing from either.  However, Westpac did announce a partnership with Samsung, so look to Westpac's solution being "available on select Samsung devices".  Other Vodafone Group companies have already launched SmartPass as well - in partnership with Samsung, so it's "available on select Samsung devices" as well.

I'm surprised anti-competition authorities have not handed Samsung a "please explain" (or lawsuit.  Whichever).

The whole "available exclusively on [insert company here]" makes any attempt at mobile payments futile.

Back to Paypal app and contactless cards.

Actually TSMNZ was announced April 2012, so it's about 27 months now... and still nothing.

I should note that Westpac Australia already has tap and pay in their online banking app - but you guessed it, Samsung only.  Westpac NZ claimed to me that their partnership with Samsung was to build solutions "for all devices, not just Samsung" but I personally doubt it.
