christchurch is participating in this earth day where people turn their lights off for one hour on 29 March at 8pm. and to promote this the prime minister gave $30,000 to the organisers. i don't know who comes up with these events but it is a waste of time. how is turning off the power for one hour going to save the planet? i know some people in christchurch and they won't be turning their power off. $30,000 of taxpayers money is just wasted money. at the end of the day it is only going to be the city council owned buildings that are going to turn their power off, not the residents. it scheduled for 8pm. 8pm is still light outside isn't it? lights are not even on at 8pm in the summer because the sun is still out. i don't know any businesses that would turn their power off for one hour because i am sure they will lose alot of money if they lose one hours work. the organisers should find a way to stop global warming instead of having these turn your power off for one hour things.
What environmental movement is a good thing if it costs money in the end? What does the $30,000 go towards? Does it go towards purchasing solar power equipment for businesses? I don't know anything about this project.
I think we are too far south for effective solar electricity. Polluting is cheap (chch smog is famous), sometimes you have to go out of your comfit zone to have a green impact.
Again this is a social event, it's mostly just feel good, but it puts people on the spot to reduce there energy foot print and to spend sometime think out the environment of the community/city/country/planet and the blown up space junk.
