Wow, the IRD is really hard to get in touch with if you don't have a landline phone (although, haha, even if you do sometimes). I tried calling them this morning, and get the usual message of "higher than normal wait times, but we can schedule a call back". Only the call back option doesn't accept mobile numbers, and there's no option just to wait on the line at your own expense.

The only way I could get through to someone, was to ring complaints, and they'd transfer me.

If anyone else gets stuck with the same problem, the complaints line seems to be a quick way through.

I had this problem from Australia. Called their +64 4 number, got a message that they were overloaded and only option was to put in for a callback, but it would only accept NZ landline numbers. Luckily I have an NZ landline number through 2talk, so I was OK - but imagine it must be impossible for those overseas who don't.

I have no problems with IRD and child support , call backs to my mobile work fine. I wonder why it works for that but not other departments.

And here I was, thinking the complaints line would probably have IRD's longest wait times!

I find a lot of businesses have yet to cotton on to the fact that an increasing number of customers will not have landlines. Often, 0800 numbers simply do not work, for example.

Yes, including online forms where the phone number is mandatory, but won't take mobile numbers....

Ah that's very interesting other departments accept mobile numbers to call back. The complaints person said she'd pass along the information, and also my suggestion of the option to wait on the line. It sounded like she'd heard that all a few times before, haha.

LOL! Actually it's the second time I've had to ring complaints (the first time wasn't an actual complaint, but letting them know of a phone scam) and both times they were really quick to answer and helpful.

Oh dear, hopefully businesses catch on soon.

Usually companies with a long wait time tell you how many hours you have to wait, so I set a time and leave my phone and come back, and they are usually accurate. Had to do with with Spark the other day. I avoid the call back one, becuase it then depends on me being free at the time they call. So it could be a case of phone tag.

You didn't used to be able to phone the IRDs 0800 number  from a mobile. Maybe that has now changed, and they now just can't phone you back on a mobile.

Ah you still have to call the 04 number from a mobile (at least for the tax department). Agreed about phone tag!

I guess they'd need a lot more lines if people are able to stay on the line rather than request a call back, which costs them too.
