I often avail myself of in-store WiFi like McDonalds, BK, New World etc just to pass the time when I am there. But most of them require you logon and they don't seem to remember you.

I have noticed when I am in for a short time and want to pay using my phone using a PayWave EFTPOS, the payment will fail because the phone has connected to the store WiFi but I haven't logged on so there is no Internet.

I am using ANZ GoMoney but I would think the problem would be the same with Apple Pay or Google Pay?

Just wondering what other GZ folks experiences are.

I have made maybe two purchases with Android Pay without a data connection.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to my understanding with Android Pay you have a limited number of tokens that are used when you purchase something and when you (re)connect to the internet they are replenished.

I'm not sure how Apple or ANZ's payment systems work though.

That could be the problem.  ANZ GoMoney probably needs a real-time connection.  I am going to see if I have any cards that I can use with Google Pay.  Certainly as soon as I make a payment the payment and merchant show up in the app

[UPDATE]

Looks like the only card I have that will work with Android Pay is a US credit card. I might give it a go with a Big Mac or something :-) The exchange rate isn't too bad and anyway it's not a huge purchase.

goMoney Wallet, Android Pay and Apple Pay don't require Internet connectivity to make a payment. They all cache tokens on the device and use these. They do however require Internet connectivity periodically to update these tokens.

Android seems to be a little less smart than it used to be when it detects a WiFi network with a captive portal. They finally changed it so it would ignore the WiFi as it requireed authentication and continue to use mobile data, but it seems this confused people so they've changed things again.

I never ever set my phone to auto connect to a SSID that requires a captive portal.

You shouldnt leave insecure networks in the list of networks on your phone when you are done with using them, as it will be constantly seeking those networks and it just takes walking in range of someone with a wifi pineapple or similar and then you are on their network with them able to man in the middle anything you do.

Good advice. I keep forgetting sometimes. Going to try again later today, thanks.
