I filed my online GST Return on the 5 Jan 2010.

I noticed they had not given me my credit as usually they do so within a couple of days.

Phoned them, and they have no record of me filing my GST return.

Yet, I have a copy of the filing receipt, which clearly shows that IRD received my online GST return on the 05 Jan.

The IRD were not interested in finding out why they lost my return, they just said to refile.

Yet, had i not received a GST credit it is likely they would impose charges and penalities.

I've had problems with the IRD online services before. Usually it is OK , but their services cannot cope during times of high workload (eg, just before  important due dates).

Fortunately, I can just refile the return , but it annoyed me they didn't care that their system had lost my return. They just said it probably happened during an upgrade but did not even know if there was an upgrade on that day.

Yer it annoys me that they don't give any sort of unique receipt number when you submit it online, just that it was submitted at a certain date and time.

I had something similar with doing a car rego on hold with LTNZ - typical response was that it never happened. I lost the saved page on an old HDD that died and ended up being baycorped for a year of car rego that I shouldnt have had to pay for, and infact couldnt have paid for since the car had no warrant.

There is no accountability for the web systems of government departments which IMO is shocking.

The date and time is enough proof, as long as you print it out. I actually had this problem before too, and ended up getting put through to their complaints person who said that it was a problem at their end. Huge waste of time really , and they don't compensate you for that wasted time. You would think they would have a better system, especially as they would prefer you to submit it online, and have cease providing carbon paper versions of the GST form.

yeah, needs to be more accountability on govt departments and their online services. Especially when they have the power to throw you in jail.
