Hi

Im asking a mate to forward a package from Oz to NZ. Does anyone know a cost effective way to transfer money over there? My mate does not have Paypal.

Im only talking AU$30 so if its not cost effective to direct deposit I will just post cash.

Thanks

I'm not 100% sure, but I think some banks will do transfers to Australia bank accounts. Someone else might know for sure.

PayPal is easy, and not expensive.

As above.  Plus if he gives you his bank details you can deposit the money straight to his account.
But either of these 'Transfer' options will cost you.

Other option is to send a cheque... it's safer than mailing cash just allow for the exchange rate when you write it.

I don't have the best solution for you but I know banks will charge you at least $20 to transfer to an Aussie account.

How about Paypal?

Some banks charge to receive money from overseas as well. Think I saw ASB charge $20 or $25. So you may end up paying about $50 in fees.

How about Western Union.  There is a charge, if you look online it will tell you how much.  If you send cash make sure you include a return address.  Cash is a NZ Post prohibited item, so if they spot it they will return it.  I have had this happen before with Christmas money that I sent over for the grand kids. The money was folded up in a cd case (under a cd) but the x-ray machine found it.

I use Tranzfers, com to send money overseas, which charges a $12 flat fee to send money to certain major counties ( i realise your sending a small amount)  which is comparable to WU but not as direct as cash...

Paypal does seem the easiest way for your situation however

Banks will cost a fortune, and the receiving bank in Oz will also charge to receive the funds, so your friend will also get a fee (for example NAB charges $10). I've been using OrbitRemit, which is really good, but will still charge a flat $10, so it's really only useful for larger amounts.

Put the cash in an envelope and post it.

If the OP/their friend is wanting to change NZ cash to AU cash at some point, that will also cost money...

Send it to him in chocolate bars or some other item... $30 of Whittaker's dark... mmmmmm

(I'm not completely joking - find out if there is something local he wants and post it... will still cost something for posting, but might be cheaper than money transfer!)

Thanks for all the replies, looks like their arent any cost effective channels. I will just draw out some AU$ from the ATM (there is one on Willis Street, Wellington which does this) and post it over to Oz.

Appreciate everyones time...

+1

For $30 there is no better option. fold the money 2-3 times to make it less obvious it is bills (if scanned) and wrap it in a folded piece of paper (or 5) and post it away.

DO NOT make it look like a birthday or other seasonal card. Crims know these often have cash in them. Just use a normal business envelope and make it look as boring as possible

I've never lost money this way. I've sent a lot more than $30.

If you're in a hurry....then you have no choice but bank wallet-rape.

You can do it easily with Paypal, like I already said. You'll pay at most 3%, maybe nothing. You just send it to their email address which is their account, they can withdraw it from paypal to a bank account overnight. It's quick, cheap, easy, quick, and almost completely free of risk. It's a lot safer than cash in an envelope.
