Hi Quic and GZ,

I switched to Quic on Friday which was completely painless and all seems good so far.

I am however seeing some funny routing to Facebook, almost like it's flapping between NZ and AU.

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but was just interested to hear if this is a known issue.

Cheers.

I'm seeing something similar

But michaelmurfy isn't: https://smokeping.interwebz.nz/smokeping/?target=InternetHosts.Facebookv4

If you're not using Quic's DNS servers, you'll have to expect this. I'm quite certain that Facebook ignores edns. While facebook does periodically reroute users for maintenance/load, if you want a more consistent ping to services including facebook then I'd suggest using Quic's resolvers, otherwise this will always happen.

For contrast, here's my smokeping on Quic using their resolvers, through a pi hole of course :)

Interesting.. your pattern is similar, but times don't match exactly.

My target is just facebook.com and IPV4

I suspect @3l3m3nt is on to something here. I'm also using Quic DNS, and I'm not seeing anything like you both are.

the smokeping target is IPV4 though, so if I do have an incorrect IPV6 server it wouldn't have any effect?

I just have 'use peer DNS' ticked in ipv6 dhcp-client.. or CLI is this (Mikrotik)

/ipv6 dhcp-client
add add-default-route=yes interface=vlan10-internet pool-name=isp-ipv6pool pool-prefix-length=56 request=prefix

Ah, you're on the same BNG and murf and I so I doubt it's routing.

You could try disabling use peer dns, but iirc for whatever reason on my tik didn't stop it receiving upstream dns servers. I also can't remember what I did to fix it, but give it a whirl and see if it makes a difference :)

that ipv6 DNS is quad9... I don't have it configured on the router, so is it being handed to the ipv6 dhcp-client by Quic?

Manually update your DNS with the above (also on Quic's support page) and see how that helps.

So, even though that's an IPv6 DNS your router / clients will also use this for IPv4 endpoints. IPv6 DNS is not exclusively for IPv6.

Further expanding on this - with me, on Quic's DNS I get 31.13.78.35 (NZ) and for Quad9's IPv6 DNS I get 157.240.8.35 (Sydney).

Also just moved the IPv6 DNS over to Quic (when did they go live?) and away from Cloudflare.

Was using Quic for IP4 already.

As another datapoint. I'm using cloudflare for DNS... IPv4 only network.

Edit - most of the delay spikiness is because I'm not prioritising ICMP/smokeping over everything else my server and that interface is doing :)
