JMatt94: Does this mean I should hold off purchasing a new TV? Will it really replace HDMI or just be another alternative?

hold off till when?

* till HDBaseT arrives
* till newer 3d technology arrives
* till all TVs have YouTube built in
* till LED screens are no more expensive than LCD screens (they're cheaper to make)
* till OLED screens are commonplace
* till fibre optic connects alll your TV's and stereo equip
* till satellite is dead and HDTV is piped via FTTH
* till holographic 3d tv's with multi-sensoral feedback debut

gotta draw a line somewhere...

When IPTV is commonplace using ethernet to connect devices would make sense...

Unless of course we all have to use Denons Directional cables, because we'd have to turn them around for playing back anything we recorded....   Laughing

wellygary: Sounds to me like the Korean manufacturers are trying to stop paying Royalties to the HDMI consortium,

No mention of how things like HDCP function over this new protocol, which will be the big roadblock for content providers really supporting this protocol.

People have already demonstrated video quality isn't really an issue for many of them if they just want to watch - whatever.

I predict "screeners" will be the new "VCD" if HDMI actually prevents people from "backing up" (ripping) content.

Silly name but it doesn't sound like a bad idea using an already very common place connector. I want HDMI to die as it has far too many flaws for my liking but in reality it's not going to happen, it has the backing of numerous companies who rely on it's copyright protection abilites and consumers don't like having to change tv cables every couple of years.

In a perfect world we would have gone with the cable the professionals use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_digital_interface
this is whats currently in use in the broadcast industry to carry digital video signals.

HDMI was doomed from the start when they just took the limited distance electrical LVDS from DVI, mandated no cable equalization in the spec, and put it on a crap plug with no anchoring or field termination.

JimmyLizar: "LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Valens Semiconductor have been secretly conspiring to kill HDMI.  And today they set their plans into motion, introducing a brand new audiovisual standard,  HDBaseT. "

Full article here

Bring it on I say.  HD video all around the house without baluns etc

Finally a video network designed for UTP without baluns, amps, or special plugs. HDBaseT Comparison Table

Apparently gear will ship in quantity next year. Probably will turn out to be cheaper and better than HDMI too.

Cool

Time to find a new industry!

$500 for a cable for the new standard? hmmm

never buy cables from local stores way over priced.. they did a test on the gadget show UK
and found gold cables verse a good shielded cheap hdmi cable was no difference after all its digital signals.

if you need a hdmi cable check out dealextreme (they are in hongkong but Ive necer had a problem with them) I bought mine for $8 each and work well
ut they have gold ones there for double the price.. beats the $60 to $120 prices in nz stores :)

im sure in time they support the new standard cables as well as a reasonable price

New standard only needs cat5e or 6 - that's under $2 for a 2 meter cable.

Some of the cheaper hdmi cables are pretty dire, low quality plastic for the strain relief so it just snaps, solder that looks like it was applied by braile and heated with a nail stuck in a flame etc.

The moderatly priced ones on deal extreme are nice tho, I was hoping they would get some nice looking speaker cables that matched with the weave etc on the outside, but not yet.
