Got the 83" G4 onto wall without any major dramas, and was relieved I could get it to the perfect height on my old bracket without having to move the mounting plate (I really didn't want to get the power tools out again!).

It's a whopper. The box is enormous, and TV is heavier than I was expecting at about twice the weight of the 65" C8 it replaced.

Haven't had a chance to watch much yet, but initial impression is (unsurprisingly) that it's a very nice TV if you can justify the spend.

Pics or it didn't happen!

What movie are you going to watch first to take it for a test drive? (And yes, there is a right answer...)

I have been running my current panel on a stand and I'm really impressed that a wall bracket can take the weight of an 83 G4 or bigger!

Didn't think to take a pic.

Obviously Weekend at Bernie's

In all seriousness, I'm not sure. I was trying to think of what would be a great "showcase" movie. Maybe Mad Max Fury Road? You obviously have one in mind, care to share?

What panel do you have at the moment?

83" G4 is just over 40kg (it feels heavier, maybe just the awkward way you need to lift it?), and my bracket is rated to 60kg so I'm actually ready for the 97" too (if I had $47,000).

It's those brackets that cantilever out from the wall that give me to the shits!

Sorry I have a 65 panel on a stand. It's amazing a bracket can support 40kg+

Ding ding ding! The quintessential home theater test... I would have also accepted Dune or Blade Runner 2049 as a runner up to be fair.

And Weekend at Bernie's was a given 2nd cab-off-the-rank... ofc only on VHS, the only acceptable way to watch it... with the magic of 10x upscaling!

Dune.

Well really just the Sardaukar attack on loop.

Handle9: Dune.

Yeah, that shows it off better than Fury Road. I watched Avengers: Infinity War yesterday, that looked really good.

The size has taken no time to get used to at all, but I'm still adjusting a bit to the difference in brightness and picture settings compared to the old C8.

On the C8 for HDR (non-Dolby Vision), I used Dynamic Tone Mapping to give the picture a little extra "pop". But with the brightness of the new panels using Dynamic Tone Mapping blows the brightness up way too high. I'd fallen a bit into the trap of seeing the HDR demos and wanting everything to look like that, and then being disappointed that in "Filmmaker Mode" things often looked very flat by comparison.

However, when I put my iPad Pro in "reference" mode for comparison it's virtually identical to the G4 Filmmaker Mode. Turns out a lot of modern movies are just meant to be dark. And HDR isn't meant to constantly burn your retinas.

So I've settled on "Filmmaker Mode" for everything (other than gaming). Energy saving off, OLED brightness 100 for Dolby Vision and HDR, but down to 25 for SDR. It's sacrilege, but have enabled TruMotion on a very low setting (De-Judder 3, De-Blur 0) which makes panning shots less choppy but without introducing a noticeable soap opera effect. And on SDR only have set gradient smoothing to low. Tweaked the white balance in Dolby Vision mode a little based on advice in another forum (meant to improve slightly raised blacks, but honestly I don't think I can tell).

Trumotion on. I think I just vomitted a little in my mouth.

I'm joking of course. You should use the settings that are pleasing to you rather than what is "good."

In your opinion, does the G4 handle Sky Satellite low or standard Definition well?

Can't comment on Sky Satellite as I don't have it, but it handles the likes of the SD Freeview channels no better or worse than my old C8 from what I can tell. It takes an awful low-res source and presents an awful low-res picture. Only now it's an 83" awful low-res picture.

I only briefly tried the AI settings and couldn't see much difference, so turn them back off. This may improve some sources, but I think it's a global setting and I didn't what it messing with everything, so am leaving it off for now.

Some of the other various setting that I disable by default may improve things, but I just don't watch anything lower than 1080p so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

In principle I agree, and I never enabled it on the 65" it replaced. I'm usually the first one to turn it off completely.

But on the bigger 83" screen the judder in some shots is a lot more noticeable, and OLEDs virtually instant response time accentuates it more than some other screen types.

I have the "intelligent frame creation" (same as trumotion etc) set to min on my 65". It doesn't look terrible with it off but it definitely has minimal soap opera on min. My good friend that just got his 65' C4 had it all the way up when I visited and its looks awful... Panning shots look so fake its funny.

Fwiw for anyone here, I got a 3+ year old LG oled panel replaced under CGA due to dead pixels spreading along the top edge.

If you notice it then it’s not much hassle to get it done, apparently a common fault with oleds where they can sprout dead pixels clusters in corners or along edges.

Hi team,

Can I ask please what the time periods each year for TV sales are in NZ?

Black Friday / Boxing Day likely candidates around this time, but when would we be likely to see runout deals on 2024 models before the new 2025s arrive?

Also additional info if necessary
I'm after a 65 or 75", ideally with a wide viewing angle and currently have a Sony we use for most smart features (ie not running a stick/apple tv etc for this content, running native on the device so want something semi peppy spec wise).

Thanks.
