Hiya,

To do time shift TV on my new Samsung LED I, apparently, need a USB thumb drive that is capable of reading and writing at 5Mb/s.

The cheap Apacer I get from PBTech is not up to it. Anyone care to reccomend a good brand that meets these specs? I used to like Kingston but there maybe something better?

Cheers

-Al

Although I feel I know the answer to this I assume you want USB 2 not USB 3??? I would recommend using pricespy.co.nz as one of the search options is speed. USB 2 speeds are upto about 20Mb/s but the speedier the more expensive. I recently paid $60 for a USB 3 drive with really good speeds which was more than double what I could have paid for just a basic USB 2 one.

Here's a link for USB Drives on Pricespy on my screen that's showing a minimum of 10Mb/s read and write but for you you may need to just change this yourself.

I did a test on a few drives I had a year or so ago and was quite surprised at the practical transfer speeds between them. You can download a basic test program off the net and try tests that transfer a known file size a few times and this can be quite interesting and free to do.

Basically, if it's a "cheap" one, then don't hold your breath. Pretty much everything A-Data make falls into this category, I've had 3 separate items of theirs, 2 of them have failed, not a good hit-rate.

I've got one of the "big" Kingston DataTravellers, 8GB which works fine though.

I just plugged a small 80GB 2.5" drive into mine. It'll happily do 40MB/sec, so total overkill.

One of these things is supposedly good for 8MB/sec:

Or 20MB/sec:

Being a TV it's unlikely that it's going to have USB 3 capabilities. USB 3 however is fantastic in fact my USB 3 drive nearly performs as well on a USB 2 port as it does on the USB 3 ports if only I could find a 4 port USB 3 PCI card for my PC as I now own more USB 3 devices than I have available ports.
